One of the largest reptile predators in the Americas, these ancient survivors can grow over 15 feet long and thrive in both saltwater and freshwater habitats, from mangroves to coastal estuaries. Watching one this close and freezing this exact moment in time is exactly why I do what I do.

After countless hours scanning the canopy in Costa Rica, I finally had the chance to photograph a Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni).

Despite their slow reputation, these incredible mammals are perfectly adapted to life in the treetops. Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths can rotate their heads up to 270°, spend most of their lives hanging upside down, and move so slowly that algae often grows in their fur—providing natural camouflage from predators.

After 11 years of searching, patience, and countless hours in the field, I finally photographed one of the rainforest’s most elusive predators—the Jaguar (Panthera onca).

As the largest cat in the Americas, jaguars possess the strongest bite force of any big cat relative to their size, capable of crushing turtle shells and caiman skulls. They are powerful swimmers, apex predators, and a keystone species that help maintain healthy ecosystems throughout their range.
