Leaving Des Moines from a nicely situated hotel between a private golf course and a big Starbucks, with no chance to indulge in either. I've spent so much time here it's almost like a second home. 40 years of returning to the area that was my initial adventure and the starting point for subsequent ones. An easy cruise on the familiar NY State Thruway where we meet fellow travelers heading East and home. Until it's not. A major accident has shut down this vital link and Tesla navigation warned us before anything else and thanks to the alert eyes of my navigator, June, we've plotted a new route quickly....

You will usually close where you want to be, but maybe sometimes the place can choose you. Approaching Milan, Ohio for our last overnight something sounded familiar about this place. A quiet farming town, we were not impressed by our dinky motel across from a refinery. A recommendation of a breakfast joint led us to the real town and on the square, a statue of it's native son, Thomas Edison....

Driving long hours day after day can be physically exhausting not from any real work; such as playing golf : ) but the intense, focused attention needed. So it's necessary to recovers best as possible with B&B. Yes, beds and breakfasts, even if you find it at a Best Western motel. And if you're EV road tripping, it's nice to get a free 100% charge overnight to boot....

You don't need a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows. But the windy.com app sure is helpful. Of all the consumption factors that go into determining when and how many kW's you need to charge, headwinds do not enter into the amazing algorithm that the onboard computer uses. And our learning curve got steeper as we drove across Montana....

And miles to go before I sleep, miles to go ...... Our ultimate range test. 665 miles today and with a long leg into Miles City, MT, we arrived with only 8 miles to spare. A 3% battery charge; which means this 250 kW SuperCharger in 97° is now humming ! A trick I gained from watching Out of Spec Motoring's YouTube videos is to lay a cold wet towel on the charger handle to maintain the best charging rate. So it essentially is pumping nearly 1000 miles per hour as we're sitting here at the Zip Trip location.
