A photo-lover’s paradise - Burano!
Burano is a series of several different islands all linked with bridges in the Northern Lagoon. As soon as we got off the ferry, the first thing that stuck us was the inscription "donaci Gesù la tua pace", that is "give us Jesus your peace" on the the sacred statue by Barbaro (the picture below).
Hot Green, bright turquoise, deep red, lemon yellow color houses reflected in green water channels will intrigue any tourist or photographer alike. A true fisherman's island where you can see fishing boats come in at the end of the day with their catch. They say that fishermen painted their houses in bright colors to see them from long distance when they were far away for fishing. The custom continues and even to this day, anyone who wants to paint his or her house must submit a request to the local government and they according to the coloring system that dates from Burano’s 16th-century Golden Age, decides which colors may be used for that specific house.
Ever imagine living in a house built on palafittes, with walls made of woven canes and beds made of dry leaves. They say, that is how the first set of houses were built way back in 6th Century because the ground was too tender. Later these raw houses were changed with buildings made of bricks and that is the beautiful Burano Island we know today.
While many renowned magazines include Burano, Veneto, Italy in their lists of “the most colorful cities in the world”, it is almost without question the world’s most colorful island. With < 2700 inhabitants, this tiny place of the coast off Venice is pure, utter joy.
Now the part, I took a shot of the bell tower from a distance and the tower came in leaning (picture below). While reviewing the shot, it took few seconds to sync in my head that Pisa isn’t the only tipsy tower in Italy. I was holding the camera horizontally; it was the tower that was really tilted 🙂 -with Vaneet & Aarti
