Week 2: Traditional Landscape
Title: Glow
Slowly catching up because I started late on the photo assignments, so here's week 2! Also realized I should give my images titles.
It's been a while since I did astro photography (the last time was summer 2013!), but it's still one of my favorite forms of landscape photography. The night sky is full of stars and so captivating to look at. If you go somewhere dark enough on a moonless night, you can actually see the milky way!
Over the weekend, there was supposed to be visible aurora (aka. northern lights) in Seattle, and so a bunch of friends and myself went for a 70 mile excursion to see them. Unfortunately we didn't see anything visible to the eyes, but the camera did capture some of it in the right edge of this photo (in purple). We did get to see the milky way though, and you can still kind of see it along the right edge of the tree line even in the light trails here. We also saw a lot of shooting stars and made some wishes.
Technical:
I shot this with my 12mm fisheye lens, which is really awesome for night sky photos. This photo was stacked from 70 shots over 35 minutes (30s, ISO 6400, F2.8). With some editing in StarStaX and a bit of adjusting in Photoshop to give the softened effect on the stars, it turned out really well. I actually had to reduce contrast and clarity before stacking, otherwise my photos had way too many stars.
