☀️ Today while cleaning up my Lightroom library and organizing files, I stumbled upon this image I took in 2010 of this beautiful young woman about to graduate high school.
☀️ The moment I opened the file, I experienced feelings of warmth and nostalgia. The sun going down and the subtle back lit hair feels so freeing. Fortunately I had a PSD file so I could process the image in relatively good quality.
☀️ I remember walking around the Mission District, San Francisco for a few hours and whatever background caught my eye, we’d stop and shoot a few frames. There was no plan. Just take a walk and shoot.
📷 My shooting style from the 2000s was very loose and mostly captured in natural light settings. The feelings of shooting freely on location in natural light is calling me lately.
☀️ For the past two years I’ve been hunkering down in my studio practicing studio light techniques. It’s meticulous and calculated work. And as much as I love what’s being created in my studio, I want to get outside and shoot in a more spontaneous atmosphere.
📷 It’s fascinating looking back at older work and seeing how I’ve grown and changed as a photographer and artist. I’m a very different and more accomplished photographer and technician, in my opinion. At the same time, I’m craving unplanned natural light sessions with an “on the fly” approach.
☀️ If you’re a photographer, I highly recommend looking back at some of your older work and see what feelings come your way. Sometimes a photo might make you cringe and say “ouch, did I take that?”
📷 Or maybe you’ll be inspired by some of your older ways in how you made photographs.
