Is there space for you to enter a saturated Senior Portrait market? According to a quick Google search, and running some easy math - I think so.

Even if you were booked and busy there’s no way you could serve all the potential clients. I ran these numbers based on my area ( greater Seattle ) - but I encourage you to do some of your own market research to see what’s possible wherever you’re located!

Chasing likes, trends or trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing is killing your creativity.

Do what you are passionate about about - create work that makes your clients feel good. Create for yourself, create without needing validation. And remember, your clients are what really matter at the end of the day 🌞

The rest will follow.

3 easy things you can do to help with your portrait photography business - starting today.

1. Be Authentic, be genuine, be yourself. My explore page is flooooding with boosted IG posts promoting sales, bookings, mini sessions, etc. but most of them aren’t even local to me. Unless you are running a highly targeted ad, I have seen ZERO client bookings from an actual IG ad. Instead shift your focus to telling the story of your work, the why behind what you do, the client experience. Draw people in - they will stay because they are interested in working with you. I’ve shifted my posting strategy and already have started to see the *right* people follow my account ( actual clients in my target demographic )

2. Pinterest. This is such an under-rated social platform and where ALMOST EVERYONE searches for inspiration. Get your work on Pinterest and link it back to your website - better yet, the actual blog post or page it’s related to to. I started a 30-day challenge with myself this week to post 4 pins in the AM and 4 in the PM ( you can schedule this ) and I am already paying attention to which captions are seeing faster results. Let’s report back on this soon....

3. Blog posts! Going back to my 2007 days when my blog was my number one reason for getting into senior portrait photography, and how I reached the majority of my audience and clients. I had to start my website from scratch in 2023 so each week I am focused on posting 2-3 new blog posts ( a mix of updated old posts, new work, and re-visiting content ).

Have you tried any of these? Can you dedicate the next 30 days to implementing a plan to do 1 or more of these consistently?

Best practices for setting up portrait photography pricing and packages for your sessions ( part TWO )

Create 2-3 packages that each provide unique value and experience.

My middle package is my signature service, priced at $2800 and includes professional hair & makeup - something I have specialized in offering for 20 years. My lowest package is $1150 for an hour of photography and a small collection of digital files. My top package is for clients that want me to travel for their session, or destination senior photos and starts at $3500 + travel fees. I book this on occasion, with is intentional since they require a lot of planning, work and effort. My lowest package is for clients who want the Michelle Moore experience but have a tighter budget.

When you price yourself this way you set yourself up for success, and help your clients understand the key differences between each package. They come to you knowing what they want, and can quickly decide which package is best for them. Make your pricing clear and concise, and stop undervaluing yourself and your services.

Best practices for setting up portrait photography pricing and packages for your sessions ( part ONE )

Create 2-3 packages that each provide unique value and experience.

Start with your middle package - this is your signature service, and the package you want to guide people towards. Your lowest package should be the bare minimum that you want to make for walking out the door, but it shouldn’t include your best offer. Your top package should be the reach package - the one with something truly extraordinary and one you would be stoked to book, but should not be your primary focus.

Create a middle package that serves your clients, and is the number you want to make. The small package is for people who want to book you, as an entry point - and the top package is everything you offer with the icing on top.

When you create multiple packages that just add time or digital files ( examples: ) you aren’t inspiring people to book a higher package, or they won’t see the value in why they should spend more with you. Stop pricing yourself this way.
