Scenes from Grand Manan — an island where fog, tides, and light are always reshaping the landscape.

☀️ Sunrise at Swallowtail Lighthouse, one of the most photographed spots on the island, was worth the early start. From the air you really see how dramatically it juts out into the Bay of Fundy.
🌫 Fog often drifts across the southwest cliffs, swallowing the headlands and leaving only glimpses of the shoreline... a moody contrast to the clear skies at other ends of the island. Had fun landing after we were quickly engulfed.
🏖 At Deep Cove Beach I expected rugged surf but the lagoon behind the beach was just as striking... a sheltered pocket of calm water framed by forest.
🌅 Grand Manan sunsets are something special. I caught one where a dense fog bank met a ceiling of glowing clouds... the kind of scene I usually watch from the other side in Lubec.
📸 Another simple sunrise frame from Swallowtail... just light, sea, and the clean lines of the horizon. Sometimes simplicity carries the most weight.

Made a recent trip to one of my favorite places… Sedona, Arizona… for the first time in 20+ years. While there have been many changes (including many more crowds) the important parts were still there. 😉
For us, the key was staying on East coast time and hitting the trails early… which also made for some amazing sunrises. We were also lucky to get there after the unusually snowy weather (though part of me would have enjoyed capturing a snow covered Sedona, even if it meant some muddy trails).
1. Birthing cave - this was a new one for me, what an amazing place! Pretty quick hike, but definitely some complexity trying to climb the cave wall to be able to capture the full view. Climbing shoes are a must for this one.
2. A chilly sunrise at Bell Rock. At 29F, I was glad I remembered my hat and gloves.
3. Another one at Bell Rock later in the day just as the sun was peeking over the mountain. This is a fun hike where you can basically go as high as you are comfortable to see some amazing views of the valleys below.
4. Sunset, just love the colors over the red rock
5. This one is from the Fay Canyon arch. This is where the walls of the arch came together at a sheer cliff. Since the arch is only a few feet separated from the rest of the mountain, it is definitely easy to miss.
6. Subway cave in Boynton canyon - we got here a bit late and had to deal with some crowds, but this is a beautiful hike where you can also see some cave dwellings and petroglyphs.

I LOVE Joshua Tree! It has been years, but every time I am here, I am in awe of the serenity and beauty of the differing landscapes across the park. The winter sun path provides a nice first sunrise peek through Arch Rock. The porous nature of the rocks is great for climbing... I was able to shimmy up the side of the adjacent face to grab this shot. I put the drone up for a few shots as well.
Always daunting to be sitting in the pitch dark listening to the nearby coyotes 😳 but a fun experience.
I definitely recommend checking out Joshua Tree if you get the opportunity.

Have you been "leaf peeping"? It is a rite of passage for any New Englander... but it is not as easy as it sounds. The window is smaller than you think and it is not easy to catch it at its peak as it is highly dependent on the year's climate and your destination. You can easily start in Massachusetts in a field of auburn and end up in Vermont staring at bare trees. Of course there are foliage maps that try to provide a guide, but reliability can vary.
Anyway... this year I happened to hit it just right and got some great shots. I left the Boston area around 4am and hit New Hampshire early for sunrise and pre-crowds. I did hit a small snag with my first drone crash... in the dense woods, about a half mile away from where I parked and in a location with no cell service. Ouch. After a quick drive to civilization, a retrieval of the last GPS coordinates, a download of Google Maps, a drive back, a short hike on trail, some "off roading" and circling off-trail... I, amazingly enough, found the drone completely intact and unscathed and on the ground (I was convinced it would be 50 feet up in a tree). Probably not the best decision I've made to be wandering around alone in the woods with no service. In the end it turned out to be a beautifully timed day trip with a bit of adventure thrown in.

A few aerial shots from Lubec. Caught it just in time. It was a calm and peaceful night... except for a couple of nasty mosquitos... and some dude flying a drone. 😂 Hope to be back up there soon.
