Hawk Crossing - Cooper's Hawk Perched on Cross of our Church/Home Conversion - Gardiner, Washington - We often have Northern Flickers land on our cross high up on our steeple, and hammer away, making all kinds of noise. But this was a special moment, during a heavy rain squall , as this Cooper's Hawk stopped by to perch and look for his next meal below.

Sharp-shinned Hawk Attacking Steller's Jay - Gardiner, Washington - No jays were harmed in the making of this photo :) The hawks just love to chase and attack our jays here, but they do not kill them that we know of. Just some feathers here and there on the ground.

Black-headed Grosbeak Dining With Talkative Tanager - Gardiner, Washington - Series on Black-headed Grosbeaks - Day 9 - Sometimes it is hard to enjoy a meal at the suet diner when a blow hard Tanager sits on the stool next to you. Hopefully by now she is well on her way to Mexico or Central America for some sun and fun. I hope you enjoyed this series. I will start a new one soon for you :)

Black-headed Grosbeak Female - Enjoying the Clean Cool Water - Gardiner, Washington - Series on Black-headed Grosbeaks - Day 8 - Just as important as the feeder maintenance and cleaning is keeping a supply of clean water for our little friends. Did you know breeding pairs build a loose cup nest often out on a horizontal branch, kinda thin, kinda see-through. Historically, people called them “cut-throat” because of that bright orange chest slash.

Black-headed Grosbeaks - Holding Pattern on Suet Approach - Gardiner, Washington - Series on Black-headed Grosbeaks - Day 6 - Here are a couple of males discussing ownership of the suet on the stump. Black-headed Grosbeaks that breed around the Pacific Northwest generally migrate south in late summer and fall to Mexico, with some continuing into Central America.
Most winter in western and central Mexico, especially in wooded areas and higher elevations. Migration typically begins around August into September, so this time of year you may notice them feeding heavily as they build up energy reserves for the trip.
One especially interesting fact for your posts: Black-headed Grosbeaks are primarily nighttime migrants, traveling after dark and stopping during the day to rest and feed. That makes our yard an important little “fuel stop” visiting our feeders before heading south.
