I’m honored to share some wonderful news. Two of my photographs were recognized in Lipstik Magazine’s online photography contest.

The color image received recognition in the “Stunning Images” category, and the black-and-white fashion portrait was recognized in the “Beautiful Images” category.

After many years behind the camera, recognition like this still means a great deal to me. I’m grateful to the models, creative collaborators, and everyone who has encouraged my photography along the way.

As I continue building my photography work and teaching workshops here in Northern Colorado, I’m especially thankful to be part of a community that values learning, creativity, and making meaningful images.

Most photographers think better gear fixes weak images.
It usually does not.
What matters first is whether you understand light, composition, and subject direction well enough to make the camera work for you. That is where image quality starts to change. A good camera can record a bad decision very efficiently.
In my experience as a photographer and educator, the strongest images come from photographers who can recognize what is working before they press the shutter. That skill saves time, improves consistency, and makes editing easier later.

I’ve learned that people often judge your work before they know your skill. I felt that when I worked in camera stores, and I’m feeling it again after moving from Maryland to Colorado.
Photography has taught me that it’s less about gear and more about seeing, learning, and growing.
Have you ever had to prove yourself before people really gave you a chance?
Here’s an example of why I believe skill matters more than gear.

Most photographers don’t struggle because they lack gear.
They struggle because they don’t yet know how to consistently control light, exposure, and subject direction.
That is why some people can walk into almost any situation and still create strong images. They are not guessing. They are seeing the scene clearly and making decisions with purpose.
If you want better photography, start by asking yourself three things:
Where is the light coming from?
What is it doing to my subject?
What can I improve before I press the shutter?
That habit alone can change the way you shoot.
I’ve put together a Photography Readiness Scorecard to help people see where their strengths are, where their gaps are, and what they need to focus on next.
