"The CZ on the CNW"

On May 28, 2018, Amtrak’s California Zephyr was detoured off its normal route via BNSF railway and onto Union Pacific’s former CNW mainline between Omaha and Chicago. Due to the need for cab signaling a UP SD70ACe is on the point. Here it is seen passing the small town of Flagg, IL.

"Remnants of the Interurban"

The rails of the Illinois Terminal Railway still remain in the streets of Girard, Illinois. The IT Girard depot also stands in the background where the tracks curve around to their own dedicated right-of-way.

"Semaphore 706"

The intermediate signals at MP706 on BNSF’s Raton Sub were for a long time the most eastern pair of these antique US&S T-2 type semaphores. Here the backside of the blade shows the distinct red-yellow-green lenses as the mainline trails into the distance. Unfortunately, since this photo was taken, these semaphores have been removed.

"CZ Through Coal Country"

For the first time since 2001, Amtrak ran over BNSF's Sandhills Sub due to a washout along its typical routing in the southern portion of Nebraska. This marked the first time a scheduled passenger train ran through the Sandhills since 1968 and the first Zephyr since 1934. The California Zephyr specifically has never traversed this section of railroad - a one day only affair.
