Construction
The New River Gorge Bridge is a steel arch bridge that spans the New River Gorge near Fayetteville, West Virginia.

Length
At 3,030 feet long, the bridge is the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the United States.

Height
The bridge is 876 feet high, making it the third highest bridge in the country.

World's longest
When it was built, the bridge's arch made it the world's longest steel arch bridge. It held this title until 2003 when the Lupu Bridge in Shanghai, China was constructed.

Bridge Day
The New River Gorge Bridge hosts Bridge Day every third Saturday in October. On this day, thousands of people walk across the bridge, and BASE jumpers and rappellers perform stunts.

The New River Gorge was formed over millions of years by fluvial erosion. The gorge is lined with steep quartzite sandstone cliffs and long stretches of bituminous coal.
