Management Monday.

Did you know that fire isn’t always a bad thing? Many species of trees and other plants NEED fire in order to regenerate. For example, the giant sequoias out west need fire’s heat to open their cones and release the seeds to produce offspring. Much like this picture of the Everglades, where fire is essential for the pine and prairie lands of their ecosystem to regenerate pines and native grasses that make up its diverse ecosystem.

Did you know that these beautiful game birds, known as Ring-necked pheasants, are actually not native to North America? They are from southeast Asia, but have become popular as a bird raised on game farms that conservation agencies purchase and release into the wild or on hunting preserves. If you have ever hunted and/or harvested a pheasant, it is more than likely a bird that was stocked that year or a smart bird that held over from last year’s stocking.

Black-backed Jackals are monogamous, meaning they have life-long pair bonds. A pair’s previous litter suppresses their breeding behaviors to stay with the parents to help raise the next litter and increase pup survival rates.

One of my favorite pictures that I got on my trip to in 2019 with Pre-Vet/ Wildlife Conservation course! I miss so much! Carmen is really testing my limits on buying a ticket there RIGHT NOW so I can relish in all the amazing wildlife and intensive care and research that goes into managing this amazingly wild reserve💛
