The studio is warm, lights dimmed, white noise playing all with one goal in mind. A comfy sleepy baby.
Newborns sleep comfortably and stay sleeping when warm and cozy so that I am able to create those beautiful portraits.
Those behind the scenes details that quietly shape how a session goes.
It also has caused some new parents to doze as well.

After nearly 13 years of photographing newborns, my editing has changed a lot.

Early on, editing can feel like problem-solving. Fixing what didn't quite come together. Over time, something shifts. The camera work and lighting get refined to the point where the edit stops being a fix and starts being a finish.

I've edited thousands of galleries at this point. That kind of repetition builds a sense for things that's hard to explain knowing when a skin tone is slightly off versus just different, understanding how an image will look printed versus on a screen, recognizing when doing less is genuinely the better choice.

My editing style now is the result of years of learning what to leave alone. And I think that's what makes newborn photos feel timeless rather than trendy. Restraint, not effort.

Does the editing style matter to you when you're choosing a photographer?

Every once in a while, a family brings something that makes the whole session feel even more meaningful.

If your path to parenthood included IVF, those needles are part of your story. The struggle, the hope, the moment it finally worked. All of it led to this baby, and all of it is worth remembering.

Here's something worth knowing if you're expecting. Traditional posed newborn sessions really are best in that first 2 weeks window. Not because there's a hard rule, but because that's when babies are still the sleepiest, the curliest, and the most perfectly new. The wispy hair, the tiny pouty lips, the toes that don't seem quite real yet. All of it is still so fresh.

After about three to four weeks, babies start waking up more and those dreamy traditional poses get harder to come by.

If you're pregnant, reaching out now is the easiest way to hold a spot during that window. And if baby is already here, please just ask. I keep flexibility in my schedule for this exact reason and it's truly never too late to reach out.

Not every family needs an elaborate setup or a long session list. Sometimes what matters most is exactly what a baby looks like in those first few weeks wrapped up, cozy, and brand new.
That's the beauty of a swaddled newborn session. A simple, calm experience with two softly styled setups and a small collection of portraits focused entirely on your little one.

A note for every family heading into a newborn session: you don’t need to bring much.

My studio has the wraps, the props, the pacifiers, the snacks even a few dresses if you forget yours. What I can’t replicate is the special blanket or the sentimental detail that makes your session feel like yours.

So bring those. Leave the stress of overpacking behind.

There's a reason choosing a newborn or maternity photographer feels like such a big decision. It's not just about the images. It's about how the whole experience feels.

As a newborn and maternity photographer with nearly 13 years of experience, I've built my studio around one goal: making sure you can actually be present for this. No stress and no guesswork, just a calm, guided session where you feel supported from the moment you reach out to the moment your artwork arrives.

The curve of a growing belly to the tiny fingers and sweet little toes. The quiet way you already know each other. Those details are fleeting, and they deserve to be preserved by someone who understands exactly how much they matter.

A warm studio isn't just a comfort thing. It's actually one of the most important parts of how a newborn session works.

Babies sleep most deeply when they're warm. It's close to what they knew before they arrived, and a settled, sleepy baby is what gives a session room to breathe. No rushing through setups, no working around a fussy newborn, just a calm pace that follows their lead naturally.

Everything else builds from there. Feeding breaks when they're needed, soothing time built into the rhythm of the day, setups that wait until your baby is truly ready. It sounds simple, but it's the difference between a session that feels stressful and one that feels easy.

Did you know going in how much the environment itself shapes a newborn session?

There's a question I get pretty often when parents are researching photographers: how edited are your photos?

The honest answer is: not very and that's intentional.

I focus on balanced skin tones, true color, and gentle refinements that don't change how your baby actually looks. The reason minimal editing works is because of what happens before post-processing. Deliberate studio lighting means the color and tone are already where they need to be before I ever start editing the photos.

The goal is always the same: when you open your gallery, you should just see your baby. Because when the editing disappears, the photo gets to be just about your baby.

Before and after example photos are included in this blog post.

Newborn sessions. We wait, soothe, position, wait again. Always watching baby’s cues. It’s absolutely worth it.
