Bortle? What’s a Bortle?

Meet Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on the Planet Earth, 33,000ft from ocean floor to top with13,796ft sitting above sea level. Only Mt. Everest reaches higher into the heavens, 29,029ft high yet shy of the world’s tallest mountain.
‘The summit of Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii hosts the world’s largest astronomical observatory, with telescopes operated by astronomers from eleven countries. The combined light-gathering power of the telescopes on Mauna Kea is fifteen times greater than that of the Palomar telescope in California — for many years the world’s largest — and sixty times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.’ https://www.maunakeaobservatories.org/
Mauna Kea is considered to be among the darkest places on Earth for stargazing. Remember an earlier post, she’s a Bortle 1. See link below.
Storytime
As stories often begin…’a long, long time ago…on the Big Island of Hawaii, we adventurers (a friend and myself) found our way to the 9,200ft MK Visitor’s Center. There was said to be a night sky tour, and not just any night sky tour, but one to behold as it was under one of the darkest skies in the world. And so, it was! We adventurers were mesmerized and for the next several years (during out extended stays) we volunteered at what is called, the VIS. These nights of wonder for us began about three years before Covid. After Covid the volunteer program was no more. Sad for us, but by this time we were hooked with searching the night skies for glorious wonders.
Post Covid, I hired a Milky Way photographer to teach me this mysterious skill. It was 2am on a dark, cold and windy night. We felt as if bathed in the stars. Shaking with the cold, teeth chattering, and learning, so filled with joy. It was amazing and changed the course of my life. Since that night, Milky Way trips and night skies. Idaho, Washington, Utah – road trips, flights, dark sky parks and my front yard patio. Bortle 2 skies and Bortle 6’s, doesn’t matter, just keep learning, shooting and having fun.

MILKY WAY GALATIC CORE

Susan Scherr here again. I know I said we were going to visit Mauna Kea this time but I’m changing it up a bit. Mauna Kea and its Bortle #1 skies - next time.
This time I want to tell you about the Galactic Core of the Milky Way, and to share with you a bit more of the Utah National Parks.

When we talk about the Milky Way season in the Northern Hemisphere, we say it’s March through October. And furthermore, we say you have to see it on moonless nights and at certain times of the night. Why, when of course we can see the Milky Way throughout the year and throughout the night?
The answer is the Galactic Core. We photographers are chasing the gorgeous and gaseous Galactic Center of the Milky Way. It is here we find the images that take our breath away and keep us up in the middle of the night. Recent research findings have shown that there is a supermassive black hole in the center of our Milky Way Galaxy known at Sagittarius A. I have attached a link that explains how this research was done, an amazing read.
One last bit of night sky education. This very month starting Thursday, August 30th through about September 6th, go to a dark place as free of lights as you can find. This time of year, the Galactic Core is visible between about 9pm and 12am. This varies a little each night and of course, you are looking for a clear sky. As of right now our Western Washington skies are predicted as fairly clear. If you have binoculars use them but the core should stand out from the rest of our Milky Way band. This is dependent upon how much light pollution is around you.
If you are interested in learning how to photograph the Milky Way – give me a call.

Storytime. As I had mentioned in the last article, while in Utah we did a lot of driving trying to outrun the clouds. The first and second nights, no so much. Nights three through five, much better. One of the images I’m sharing today you will see the clouds but I think they made the image very interesting. Just less of the Milky Way Core available and the image was a quick capture and lost if you were visiting and not looking up. The beauty of this trip in multiple national parks across the state is the diversity of images we were able to capture. These will soon be on my website Susanscherrphotography. com. Until then if interested in an image call me at 206 200 6726 or find me on Messenger.

To find the darkest skies available check out some of the links below.
Until next time, when I bring you the good stuff on Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on Planet Earth!

Hey Everyone
Susan Scherr, Photographer, Adventurer, Entrepreneur and Storyteller. I'm a passionate photographer who has always longed to venture into night sky photography. In stepping out of my comfort zone, I have been absolutely amazed with all of the new and exciting things I have learned in such a short time. I want to share and take you all on this journey with me. Let's start where it all began four years ago. On the Big Island of Hawaii I hired a photographer to take me up on the Mauna Kea Volcano and to teach me this new skill. The rest is history and now I spend the moonless night skies chasing the Milky Way.
In this first of a series of blogs I'll share a bit of general information and ad adventure or two of my own.
Did you know there's something called the Bortle Scale? From 1 to 9 the scale rates the darkness of our night skies. Mauna Kea is a #1, the darkest sky rating in the world. Here in Washington State we have many Designated Dark Sky areas. We also have our own chapter of Dark Sky International. Take a minute to check out darkskiesnorthwest. This link and a few others are added below.
Okay, storytime. One month ago I landed at the Salt Lake City and headed south, spending the first night in Provo, Utah. The next five nights we traversed southern Utah from the eastern to western border. Each day's routine was to head to our chosen dark sky site around 9pm. Sometimes we hiked in after dark, headlamps adorned to our heads, other nights a short walk to our shooting location. Arches, Canyonlands, Goblin State Park, Escalante and Moab - the National Park circuit. Wherever we could find a cloudless sky we went. sometimes more successful than others. The result, an accumulation of breathtaking nights under the heavens. An unforgettable experience and a nice collection of Milky Way images for my galler which you can find at SusanScherrPhotography. com. Huge thanks to Aaron King of Photog Adventures, the ultimate teacher and guide and all around fun guy to travel with and to learn from. In our small group of adventurers from Tucson, Canada, California, Tennessee and Utah, many new friends were found.
The attched image is from Devil's Garden and I love to call it Chimney Rock. It's going to be one of my favorites for quite some time. You can order this image as small as an 8x12 or as large as 40x70. I have all of my images printed onto high quality metal and they are stunning. They are lightweight to hang, water and scratch resistant. Most images found on my website, the new ones to be there soon. Contact me from the website, on Messenger or at 206 200 6726.
Until next time. More stories to come and an introduction to Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on Planet Earth.
Thanks for being here with me!
