Today marks the conclusion to my 31st year in the classroom. If you have followed my imagery and adventures over the years, you know that as I head into summer, I will post far less frequently. I will spend significant time away from civilization and social media capturing the beauty of Wyoming through the lens to bring you fresh beauty in the fall once school restarts. I may post a teaser image from time to time, but my daily posts will pause until late August.

I'll send you into summer with this image taken looking upstream from Fishing Bridge toward the calm waters of Yellowstone Lake near sunrise. I know most of you will view this on a handheld device, so it is likely you will miss the bald eagle sitting in a tree to the left of the river and the goose flying nearly dead center at the top. Those two dynamics along with beautiful morning light make this a cool capture to me.

Happy Friday!

Have a great weekend and enjoy this image of a grizzly I encountered in Yellowstone last weekend.

I have photographed many fine bull bison specimens over the years, but this big dude has the best coif or bouffant I've captured. While he does need to rinse his goatee, what volume and density he sports! And that follicle bouquet adorning his brow would challenge even the king of beasts himself for the best "do" in the animal kingdom! That mane is his crowning glory! There are many women (and men) who would pay serious money to feature such gorgeous locks! Perhaps all of us should spend more time trying the au natural hair care plan!

This little character had just arrived, and mom worked diligently to dry him off and encourage him to stand up, which was accomplished on the 5th try, legs splayed apart to support his trembling little body. Adorable and beautiful in one moment.

I spent a portion of my weekend in Yellowstone National Park, and for the 2nd time ever was privileged to be able to photograph a great gray owl. They are such cool birds, and that gaze!

I'll send you into the extended weekend with this image of Brooks Lake from the Jade Lake trail.

I loved the feedback to the two images I shared yesterday. What great insight, much of which I completely agree with! I have always been fascinated with how relatively minor tweaks in exposure can create dramatically different results, and those two images certainly illustrate such! Thank you for your many comments!

For today, you get this shot of the Historic Sheridan Inn in Sheridan, WY. Those who appreciate history should visit to see this beauty built by Buffalo Bill Cody.

I have a hunch that today's discussion could be a bit polarizing. Once again, I'm asking you for your favorite of this pairing and would love to hear your reasoning for why. Even though these images look vastly different, they were captured the same evening just 12 minutes apart. The top image was captured first at 6:16 PM while the bottom image was captured at 6:28pm. In the top image, I used a very low-intensity light source to provide fill lighting and to bring out the detail in the stonework and to accentuate the soft glow of light coming through the windows. The exposure was a full 30 seconds, which caught some movement in the clouds. In the bottom image, I used fill flash fired by hand from multiple placements and stopped down to f8 to achieve the moonstar (impossible in first image due to diffusion from clouds). I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The moon settles toward the Teton skyline and casts a reflective path of light across the mirrored surface of Jackson Lake during the blue hour before sunrise.
