Sometimes it's fun to play with the post processing tools that Photoshop offers. It keeps things interesting and allows me to stay in tune with the not-so-common approaches to editing.

This is that. It's known as 'Selective Coloring'.

It's simple to do, really. I just selected the yellow-orange of the bee, then reversed the mask and removed all of the surrounding color to a black and white format.

Then, using a radial gradient, I lowered the contrast and brightness around the bee and a few pedals so that the viewer's eye focused on only one area of the image.

The image is real. The color of the bee is real. The rest has been manipulated to create an effect that I personally enjoy using time and again.

It's also one of the reasons some folks don't like Photoshop. But I can live with that. Creativity isn't always about what your eyes see. It is also about what your heart feels.

For all the years I've wandered Brown Canyon Ranch with Cam hanging from my shoulder, this old cattle chute has been a familiar companion. I've photographed it from the side, from a distance, beneath the stars, the storms, and yes... even the 'boring blue'... searching for whatever story it felt inclined to share that particular day.

Last night it offered a different perspective. It offered access that had been denied to me in all those years before... or I just hadn't noticed.

As evening slipped toward the horizon and the sun retreated behind a curtain of gathering clouds, I stepped into the chute itself and looked outward through its weathered jaws. Suddenly it wasn't just an old ranch structure anymore.

It became a pathway.

The worn planks beneath my boots carried the scars of decades. The splintered rails leaned inward as though guiding the eye toward the opening ahead. Beyond that opening waited a fading ribbon of gold where the day was making its quiet exit.

I found myself wondering how many things in life reveal themselves only when we step inside them.

From a distance, we see a shape.
Up close, we discover the journey.

Maybe that's the truth of old ranches, or photography, or people - that the story isn't always found by looking at something, but by walking through it.

Last night's sunset seemed to agree.

Cam remained suspicious of the entire philosophical direction of the evening and suggested we were simply standing inside a very old cow traffic jam potentially harboring snakes or other critters.

Of course I listened, took my shots, and checked each step in my retreat.

"What are we doing Sean? Day in and day out you're spending our time chasing blooms, butterflies, and bees. Doesn't that get boring after a while?"

"Cam.... you, of all cameras should know that the true boredom is in these blue skies! Nothing in them! Not a speck of drama! Just.... blue. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blue!!"

"Yeah, well at least we could grab a lake shot or twelve."

"Have you forgotten where we are? No lakes nearby brother."

"Then you could do one of your barbed wire shots...."

"Blue background. Boring."

"What about a nice middle of the road shot in the middle of the desert then?"

"A ribbon of yellow leading into a canvas of boring blue??? I don't think so. I'll stick with the three B's until some weather comes around."

"How about you go out for a night shoot then? Milky Way shots are very popular."

"The moon is bleaching out the skies. That'll have to wait another week or so."

"All right then. Bees it is. But why do you feel a need to photograph bees from bee-hind? See what I did there?"

"Bee-cause bee butts have a certain appeal to them. That, and they never turn around to face me very often. They're kinda snobby that way."

"Well I, for one, am anxious for the monsoon weather to finally arrive. This is really getting monotonous. Even silly. C'MON SKY GODS!!! SAVE US FROM OUR MISERY OF BEE-BUTT CHASES!! I EMPLORE YOU!!!"

"Soon, my old grouchy friend. Very soon maybe. There's a 55% chance of rain in tomorrow's forecast."

"Thank goodness!! I'm withering away over here."

It's true... might be a chance to chase a storm tomorrow. Then I'll leave the bees... be.

Sometimes, when you scatter seeds into the garden that you've forgotten you even had (discovered upon cleaning out the shed), you might not know what's coming... if anything.

Such is the story here. A discovery of seeds, long forgotten, were peppered in the garden located just inside the walkthrough gate this early Spring.

My wife also did her Johnny Appleseed wanderings throughout the whole yard, hoping for results, but not counting on it. It seems, however, a few of them did find the soil nourishing enough to establish a home here.

When those few germinated then began to grow, I thought they were weeds. I was ready to pull them when Siggy admonished me for even trying.

"What are they?" I asked.
"How should I know?" she replied.
"Then they must be weeds!" I concluded.
"Just wait a little longer and let's find out for sure." she said.

So I did. I waited. Now I'm happy that I did. Those four 'weedy-looking-plants' turned out to be Purple Peony Poppies. The blooms are amazing...two of the four plants already broadcasting their uniqueness to Planet Yeti's floral collection. The other two are budding, soon to hatch more blooms in the coming week.

The moral of the story? There's no moral. Not really. Okay... let's make one up then:

Not all weeds are created equal.
How's that for a moral?

In full screen, morals have a greater impact.
Jes' sayin'.

The Hibiscus bloom is one of those flowers that defies Yeti-logic. That is to say, despite this amazing flower possessing such incredible beauty, I have not yet, with a thousand attempts, found an angle or approach that pays proper homage.

Oh sure, some have been okay. You know... "Oww-kayyyy". If you enjoy leafing through flower magazines, those images would fit right in.

But that's not what I'm chasing.
Too disciplined.
Too narrow.
Too 'job-like'.

I'm looking for the shot that the magazine editor would say, "Cool photo... but no. We're not an art magazine. We sell flower seeds."

Yay!! I'm not a flower-magazine-photographer!! FREEDOM!!!

Today's boring blue skies had me pulling Cam out of the bag with his Canon 100mm Macro Lens attached, then traipsing around the backyard looking for those 'outside-the-box' angles and approaches to 'non-magazine' imagery.

Naturally the Hibiscus hit this list of mandatory attempts...
.. number 1001.

Am I satisfied?
Never.
Is it 'Good Enough'?
Only in Tombstone... (inside joke for locals).
Will I try again?
Until the day I'm flower food.

At least this one will never make it into a Flower Magazine.

MWAHAHAHAHA!!! TAKE THAT!!!

The things you find in the middle of nowhere.

A huge tin can, tossed to the side by some ancient giant?
A section of a spacecraft fallen to the earth after separation?
Or just a large container used to store grain and feed for the cattle roaming the nearby corral?

Probably something else altogether. Someone here might know.

Captured just off of Misty Ray Road, east of the San Pedro River.
