I love cardinals because they’re one of those birds that almost everyone recognizes. They can fade into the background of everyday life, but the moment you bring them up, people light up and start sharing stories. For many, they symbolize loved ones who have passed, which is one of the reasons they resonate so deeply and why I love displaying them at shows.

Like any familiar subject, though, the challenge is finding a new way to see it. Instead of focusing on the bright red feathers everyone expects, I went with a different, a simple black-and-white silhouette in the middle of a call.

One of my favorite techniques in photography is taking a couple of meaningful elements and bringing them together to create a stronger story.

If you're from southeastern South Dakota, you'll probably recognize this landmark. The challenge isn't finding things to photograph, it's finding the right combination of subjects and then waiting for the moment when everything comes together.

I got pretty heavily into birding last year as a way to see familiar places with fresh eyes.

What I quickly learned is that the bird world is incredibly deep. There are countless species, different feather patterns for juveniles and adults, male and female variations, and enough calls and songs to make your head spin. It's fascinating, but also a little overwhelming.

That's why I don't necessarily recommend every bird to people. But the Belted Kingfisher is different. They're more common than most people realize, yet somehow remain relatively unknown. The first time you watch one hover over the water, suddenly dive beneath the surface, catch a fish, and rocket back into the air with its prize, you think "OK, this one is worth remembering."

The skies couldn't make up their mind, but we stayed dry, stayed laughing, and soaked up every minute. And you know what they say... rain on your wedding day is good luck for the bride. If that's true, these two are set for a lifetime of it.
From the rings nestled in those gorgeous greens, to the quiet moment under the veil, to a reception that didn't stop glowing — this was a day worth remembering.
