Every August I get the same question from homeschool parents: what do we do about school pictures?

So, I created Homeschool Picture Day! Wednesday, September 30, 4:00–6:00 PM, here on our land in Colgate.

Each child gets a few minutes outdoors in the late-afternoon light. My whole job in those few minutes is to get them laughing before they have time to arrange their face into a Photo Smile. That's the entire trick, and after 25 years I've gotten fast at it.

I'm a homeschooling mom of three, so I know what these portraits are actually for. Not a wallet-sized rectangle you file away but a real picture of who your kid is in the fall of this particular year, when they're reading that particular stack of books and obsessed with that particular thing.

How it works: $15 per child holds the spot. There are 12 spots for the afternoon, one per child, assigned in the order they come in. Reservations close September 20 at midnight, and I'll email every family their individual session time on the 21st. Bringing more than one? Just set the quantity at checkout.

Afterward you'll get a private gallery to look through at your own pace. Prints start at $20.

And if the sky opens up, we go again Thursday, October 1, same time. I'll email you.

Free is a great price.
What free doesn’t come with is someone telling your daughter what to do with her hands. Or getting up before the sun so she gets the “sunset portraits” she wants on the sunrise side of Lake Michigan. Or catching the exact moment her shoulders go stiff because she’s thinking about being photographed, and fixing it before it reaches her smile.
Then there’s the part after. Free ends with a link.
This ended with Steve at his own kitchen table, taking his time.
Class of 2027, consider this your sign.

In twenty five years, not one client has told me they wish they had waited.

They tell me the opposite. That they're glad they got in the frame instead of staying behind the camera. That the album on the coffee table gets opened more than any folder on a hard drive. That booking during the busiest season of their life turned out to be the whole point, because that season is exactly what they wanted to remember.

Nobody regrets the outfit that made them feel like themselves. Nobody regrets letting their four year old be four.

The regret I hear is always the same one, and it always sounds like this: we kept meaning to.

Fall dates are opening now. DM me and let's get you in the photos.

Happy Son and Daughter Day!

There's a stretch of years when your kids want to be you. They put on your shoes and shuffle across the kitchen floor. They push the toy vacuum behind you while you run the real one. They ask for a sip of your coffee and make a face when they taste it.

It doesn't last. One day the shoes fit, and then one day they're bigger than yours, and the wanting to be you turns into becoming themselves.

This is the part I always want families to have on the wall. Not because it's cute, though it is. Because it's the shortest chapter and the one that disappears the fastest.

To everyone raising a son or a daughter today: you're in the good part. Even the loud, exhausting, shoes-all-over-the-entryway part.

I've been sitting on these for a while. Time to say them out loud.

Not liking how you look isn't a reason to stay invisible. I hear it constantly, almost always from mothers, almost always about themselves. Twenty pounds from now, after the hair grows out, once things settle down. But your kids aren't waiting for the better version of you. They just want you in the frame.

Family photos are not just for holiday cards. A card gets opened in December and recycled in January. That's a strange fate for the only picture of all of you together that year.

A phone full of photos is not the same as a home full of artwork. Nobody scrolls through a camera roll at Thanksgiving. But everybody stops in a hallway.

Your "I'll do it when" is stealing years of memories. When the baby's older. When we've redone the living room. When life calms down. I have been doing this for twenty-five years and I can tell you life does not calm down. It just changes shape.

And the last one, which I mean gently: the best time to book a session was probably last month. The next best time is today.

Twenty-five years in, the only regret I've ever heard from a client is that they waited. Not once has anyone told me they wished they'd waited longer.

Which of these hit a little too close to home? Be honest.

“You need to balance your expenses.”

Sure. Let me show you what twenty five years of practice looks like.

The lens. The body. The studio lighting. All of it at once, because that’s the job. You learn to carry more than seems reasonable and make it look effortless, and then someone tells you the pricing feels high.

The gear is the least of it, honestly. The balancing act is the twenty years of knowing which light to chase, the outfit conversation three weeks before the session, the six year old who needs a completely different approach than her brother, the artwork designed for one specific wall in one specific house.

Anyway. Still balancing. Still booking fall sessions.
