Going off my introduction post, I have two medical conditions that have left me disabled. First, let's talk about idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

IIH is a rare condition affecting around 200,000 people a year. Approximately 90% of those diagnosed are obese women in their childbearing years. However, that's going off the BMI we all know is not an accurate measurement. Some people can lose as little as 5 pounds and go back to normal, while others can go blind.

My doctor prescribed me 1500 mg of diamox, which is the most common medication for IIH. The average person takes 500 mg a day. My ophthalmologist was in shock over this and encouraged me to seek a surgeon. After some deliberation, we decided that getting a VP shunt was the best path forward because my quality of life was terrible.

I'm now two years out from the surgery, and while it wasn't the easiest choice, it was the right one for me. I went from sleeping 12 hours a day to being able to create again, leave the house, and be more present with my family. I even gained my vision back. However, I still deal with IIH headaches during bad weather, but it's far better than it was.

Disabilities come in all shapes and sizes, and they can be unpredictable. Just because I was able to leave the house yesterday doesn't mean I can do it today. It's essential to be patient with your friends who deal with these conditions.

I'm lucky if I can sew up 5 masks in a week. I'm lucky if I can make it through the day without a nap. I haven't been unable to make anything new because my headaches are so bad, I can't understand a sewing pattern. The only reason I can make it through a twitch stream is because I don't do it alone. I honestly don't have the space here to explain it all..

The one silver lining of the last 6 months (yes, I've dealt with 6 months of daily headaches)is , hand sewing. I can only do basic stitches, running, running back, and the back stitch. I used the back stitch on this. Because I can't handle the sound of the sewing machine, this was the only thing I could do for long periods of time. I found it calming. When I was well, everything had been cut out, and some of it had been machine sewn..

I don't know what the future is for AZA Studio arts at this time. Right now, if this is all I can do, so be it..

Slowly I'm feeling better and getting my health in order. With the help of Nate, I put a plan together to get this dress finished. It's not going to be historically accurate, but that's not the point at this time.

The polkadot fabric is just for the mock up, as I've never done a dress like this before. The final dress will be in silk. I will though have all the layers, shift, stays, bum roll, to start with.

Our Etsy shop will be back open on Monday.

A year long project coming to an end. I could machine sew it, but then you could see all the stitches in the front. Slowly taking the blue baste stitching out and putting in the final stitches. Thank you to for spending the last 6 weeks putting CoCoVid together. I've learned so much. Found so many more people to watch. I love watching this community grow over the last four years. I love the acceptance and feel less intimidated to join the historic dress community...

The last month as been strange. Three kids learning to be home schooled. Nate working from home. Getting used to the new normal while dealing with crippling anxiety. Watching how the sewing community coming together to make masks left me feeling guilty because I was paralyzed in fear. But I have a family to take care of. I should never feel obligated to make masks. And neither should you. During this time we should be doing things that make us feel safe and happy. And what made me happy was puzzles, games, and animal crossing with my family. But now, let's get some nerdy masks made..

(I am not selling masks at this time. These are being made for family and friends. If I feel confident enough, I'll make local batches for medical personal)..

I started this project back in August. It was supposed to be done for Zoe's birthday, but it sadly wasn't. Between illness and business projects it got left on the back burner, but it's finally reaching the end. I've had to do a lot of hand sewing because machine sewing isn't an option when I have one of my headaches. I'm getting faster, so hopefully I'll be able to finish more projects in a timely manner..
