My first introduction to Kalman filters wasn’t in college, it was during my first job while I was unit testing software for a satellite program.

One of my coworkers was kind enough to explain them to me, and after that I went home and binge-watched YouTube videos because I wanted to understand them even better. A few years later, I’d be the one implementing them.

Many students ask me how to get into GNC, but very few truly understand what it means and how depending on the company, you might get to do a little bit of everything or focus on one of the three.

🔻Guidance
🔻 Navigation
🔻 Control

I will always say GNC is where the cool kids are at, specifically the controls peeps because I’m biased.

To learn more from Brian Douglas, check out his YouTube channel🔻

‼️BrianBDouglas or watch his MATLAB Tech Talks on the MATLAB website.

‼️For my full article on GNC and additional resources, comment “gnc” if you don’t already have access to my free resources and project ideas.

Brian asked me what keeps me interested in controls, and we both agree that it’s just such a fascinating field. It’s a set of skills that can be applied to a plethora of industries.

Not only that, but depending on your particular interests, whether it’s coding, electronics, propulsion, etc., you can find a role or a place in controls.

If you’re learning MATLAB and Simulink and don’t know what to work on next, Brian Douglas’s Tech Talks are one of the best free resources out there.

Topics include:
✓ Control Systems
✓ PID Controllers
✓ State-Space Modeling
✓ Kalman Filters
✓ Model Predictive Control (MPC)
✓ Simulink
✓ Signal Processing
✓ System Identification
✓ Physical Modeling
✓ Robotics
✓ Machine Learning
✓ MATLAB tips & workflows

Both Brian Douglas and Steven Brunton are responsible for my obsession with controls engineering.

I’m biased so I will forever say controls engineering is where the cool kids are at.

If you like dynamics, control theory, systems engineering, or autonomous systems, then this is a field you should explore.

If you’re new to controls, comment “controls” and I’ll send you a link to my list of resources and project ideas to help you get started.

If you’re looking for a summer project to build your modeling and simulation skills, this is a great one.

Professor Gökçin Çınar and her team at the University of Michigan’s IDEAS Lab have developed open-source software that students can use and contribute to.

Comment “project” and I’ll send you the link to my projects page, where you’ll find her software and resources.
