When Lauren and Jacob first reached out about their White Mountains elopement, they told me something that honestly made me excited right away…
They didn’t want their day to feel like a photoshoot.
They wanted to watch the sunrise together. Exchange vows. Exchange rings. Eat cupcakes. Share Red Bulls. Explore the mountains. Actually be present.

So that’s exactly what we did.

At 4 AM, we met at the trailhead and started hiking in the dark. We had our head lamps on and bags packed. They carried their wedding clothes up the mountain, changed at the summit, and had a first look as the sun started to light up the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

And yes…you can absolutely have a first look during an elopement.

The morning wasn’t packed with posing or stopping every five minutes for photos. Instead, it was full of little moments. Reading vows. Laughing together. Taking in the views. Enjoying the sunrise. Just experiencing the day they had planned for themselves.

Of course I gave direction when it was needed, but some of my favorite images happen when I step back and let couples be exactly where they are.

No production. No timeline packed from sunrise to sunset.

Just two people getting married in the mountains.

And honestly? That’s what an adventure elopement is all about.

FIRST: there’s no “just” eloping. You’re getting married. It’s a big deal
SECOND: yes…. I mean if you want fun photos with it that is🫣

You don’t have to wear it the entire time which is why most people are against it. It’ll get in the way. The wind will be crazy. Yes, most likely. But let me in on a secret… you can do what you want when you’re eloping. You want to throw it on for a few photos and then put it back in your backpack COOL. Want to wear it the whole time? Also cool!

Hot take: elopements aren’t just the ceremony.

Some of my favorite photos happen before couples ever leave their Airbnb.

The coffee. The vows. The nervous excitement. The kids running around. The dress hanging in the corner. The quiet moments before the adventure starts.

You don’t have to skip the meaningful parts of a wedding day to elope. You just get to do them your way.

Activities to do in the morning:

Arthur’s Seat might be one of the most iconic places for an Edinburgh elopement. These two were surprised with an iconic blue sky/golden light overlooking the city and ended their day with views across Holyrood Park.

8 years married, together for more than half our lives, and somehow it still keeps getting better.

Last year, on our anniversary, my dad passed away. In the middle of the grief, we didn’t even realize what day it was until later that night. Since then, June 2nd hasn’t felt the same, and I don’t think it ever will.

So this year, in Scotland, we renewed our vows. Not because our marriage needed it, but because our love still deserves a day that feels joyful to celebrate.

Scotland has officially made it onto my “why would anyone ever have a normal wedding” list 😭

Spent the evening running around the hills outside Edinburgh with these two and honestly??? The light here does half my job for me. I was prepared for the wind, the rain, the overcast skies but apparently I brought the good weather with me because we had clear blue skies and a golden hour to finish off the night 😳

If you’re thinking about eloping in Scotland because you want something that feels cinematic but still actually you… I get it now.
