A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to photograph this great horned owl and one of its owlets in Fort De Soto State Park, Florida. This species of owl has a reputation of being a fierce and dominate predator so I found it a bit ironic that a peregrine falcon was attempting to snag the owlet. The mother seemed quite underwhelmed by the whole event and after about an hour the falcon just gave up and flew away.

The soft warm morning sun perfectly illuminates this lioness as she rescues her cub from a tormenting older sibling. I have been to Kenya many times and these type of unique action images are difficult to come by. It is by the skill and knowledge of guides Stanley Kariithi and Edwin Selempo that these opportunities even exist. Not only are they anticipating the behavior but also are driving the vehicle through very difficult terrain all the while trying to think about where the best photographic light is. It is magic when it all works out.K

At this time last year, I was in Kenya observing my 5th Great Migration with over 2,000,000 wildebeests and zebras chasing the rain and fresh grass. It is always exhilarating to witness such an epic event but I was looking for more unusual animals. In Samburu, the more arid region of northeast Kenya, I found what I was looking for, the gerenuk! It is a long slender antelope with the ability to stand on its rear legs in order to feed on higher leaves and flowers of bushes and trees. With its elongated neck, there should be little surprise it is referred to as the giraffe of the antelope family. Sometimes difficult to get a clean shot because its head is usually buried in a thousand branches while it feeds.

What a thrilling day ahead for Spain as a Total Eclipse of the Sun slices across the entire country. Brings back the exciting memories of capturing 17 phases of the Eclipse in April of 2024 in Stowe Vermont and then compositing them into one final image. Spain’s experience is going to be epic because the path of the eclipse will be closer to the horizon allowing opportunities for earthly foregrounds to be part of the photos!

It may be difficult to describe the love a mother for her child but the look needs no explanation. Willing to defend against any odds, nourish before herself, mentor for all coming events, and then willingly send on their way when the job is done is the lot of a mother. This is why a special day is set aside for the incredible group. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL !

It is with some embarrassment that I must admit for all the times having flown into Nairobi, Kenya, I never arrived ahead of schedule enough to visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Located just outside the city in the Nairobi National Park, this unbelievable organization rescues orphaned rhino and elephant babies nursing them back to health and raising them to sufficient age for release back into the wild. Needing constant assurance to overcome the trauma of losing its mother, attendants even sleep overnight in the stalls with the infants but switch nightly as not to imprint reliance. In order to help fund all this, feeding time is open to the public. It is so much fun to watch them return from the open plains looking for that nourishment!

The golden hues of last light engulf this topi on the savanna in Kenya. Even the smallest of mounds gives a sight advantage that may increase odds of survival. I love the artistry of shooting at this time of the day.

Look Mom, I am flying. Even a small ravine can be a challenge for a little guy. Notice the coloration of its strips. As it ages, they will turn black but for now brown helps camouflage from predators. Normally at this time of year, the grasses are more golds and browns but unusually wet conditions have resulted in a more lush green look.
