✨ LIGHTING THE WAY ✨

Every once in a while, an image becomes more than just a photograph.

“Lighting the Way” is one of those images for me.

This photograph was created with intention — from the lighting and composition to the emotion and story I wanted the image to tell. It was also an opportunity to push myself creatively and see just how far I could take an idea.

I’m incredibly honored that this image was merited by Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and became part of the PPA Merited Image Collection.

But beyond the merit, what means the most to me is the process.

Photography isn’t simply about pressing the shutter.

It’s about having an idea…
building the vision…
solving the problems…
and creating something that makes you stop and look.

I created this short video to share a little of the vision and creative process behind Lighting the Way.

🎥 Take a look.

And if this image speaks to you, “Lighting the Way” is also available as fine art through the Starlight Photography Fine Art Gallery. It is available as a professionally printed, beautifully finished piece designed to be displayed and enjoyed in your home.

What do you see when you look at Lighting the Way?

September changes everything. 🍂

New school year.
New goals.
New chapters.
New versions of the people we love.

And before we know it, the season will change again.

That’s why I love this time of year as a photographer. September is when families settle into new routines, seniors realize their final year is really here, athletes step into their season, and everyone seems to be moving toward what’s next.

At Starlight Photography, we believe portraits should be more than something you post online.

They should become art you can live with.

A beautifully crafted portrait.
A framed piece on your wall.
An album you’ll still love years from now.

Because someday, this version of them will be the one you miss.

September is a pretty good time to stop and capture it.

As a professional photographer, so much of what I create is centered around my clients—their stories, their milestones, their businesses, and their families.

But as an artist, I also think it’s important to create simply for the sake of creating.

Once a month—or sometimes every few months—I try to carve out a few hours for a personal project. I choose a theme, select a subject or product, and give myself the freedom to experiment with lighting, composition, and technique without worrying about anything other than the final image.

A few months ago, my subject was especially meaningful: my very first camera, a Penmax YN-3.

It was a 35mm film camera that I received when I was just 12 years old. What makes it even more sentimental is that it was given to me by my dad’s photography teacher and good friend.

Long before digital cameras, instant previews, Lightroom, or Photoshop, this little camera was part of the beginning of my journey in photography.

For this particular personal project, my theme was “Creating Shadow.”

Rather than trying to eliminate shadows, I wanted to intentionally place them—controlling the light so the shadow became an important part of the composition itself. It was an exercise in seeing light differently and reminding myself that sometimes what we choose not to illuminate can be just as important as what we do.

There was something pretty special about using everything I’ve learned over the years to photograph the camera that was there when I was just beginning to learn.

Sometimes personal projects are about experimenting.

Sometimes they're about challenging yourself.

And sometimes they're a reminder of exactly where the journey began. 📷

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it really means to be part of a family business that has been around for more than four decades.

So much has changed since Starlight Photography began in 1982—the technology, the way we create, how we market, what our clients want, and even how we communicate with one another.

But some things shouldn’t change.

The importance of relationships. Quality. Integrity. Taking care of people. And being proud of the work you put your name on.

I shared some thoughts in my latest article about what running a family business has taught me about reinvention—and why moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting where you came from.

Honor your history. Adapt to change. Build what’s next.

I’d love to hear from other family business owners: What has your business had to reinvent over the years?

There’s a misconception about businesses that have been around for decades. People sometimes assume longevity comes from finding a formula that works and sticking with it.

Their wedding was filled with so much love, family, and personal touches, followed by a beautiful backyard reception at Gabe’s parents’ home. Every detail was thoughtfully customized, creating a celebration that felt incredibly personal and uniquely theirs.

We also want to take a moment to thank Gabe for his service to our country. 🇺🇸 It was truly an honor to capture this special chapter for the two of you.

Congratulations, Susan & Gabe! Wishing you a lifetime of love, laughter, and wonderful adventures together. 🥂❤️

What a beautiful day celebrating Kailey and Avery’s wedding last weekend!

We began their wedding portraits among the beautiful grounds of Queset Gardens in Easton, before heading to The Villa at Ridder Country Club to continue the celebration with their family and friends.

This wedding was especially meaningful for us. Over the years, we’ve had the honor of photographing so many milestones for this wonderful family—from Bar and Bat Mitzvahs to family portraits, senior portraits, and now Kailey’s wedding day.

There is something incredibly special about being invited back to document a family’s story as the years go by. To now photograph Kailey and Avery beginning this next chapter together was truly an honor.

Congratulations, Kailey & Avery! Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness together. ❤️

I am incredibly honored to share that my image, “Roots of Time,” received Imaging Excellence recognition in the 2026 Professional Photographers of America Merit Image Review.

I created this image while visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The sky was becoming darker and more dramatic by the minute, and I photographed the Tree of Life just before the skies opened and it began pouring. That approaching storm gave the scene an entirely different mood and helped transform a familiar landmark into something much more powerful. Presenting it in black and white allowed me to emphasize the incredible texture of the tree, the movement in the sky, and the sense that it has been standing there for generations.

For those unfamiliar with PPA’s Merit Image Review, each image is evaluated by five approved jurors using PPA’s 12 Elements of a Merit Image, including impact, technical excellence, composition, lighting, creativity, and storytelling. Imaging Excellence is the highest of the four recognition levels—reserved for an image that demonstrates the highest level of success across those elements and rises above the merit standard.

Sometimes the most memorable images happen in the brief moment before everything changes. I’m grateful I was ready for this one—and made it undercover before the rain arrived!
