March was a tough month for Deep Sky Astrophotography. We had clouds, snow, or wind up to 60+mph most of the month. All enemies to very faint objects in the sky.

So with that said, I did manage to get a few minutes on M-42 (The Orion Nebula). This is a very popular target in the Milky Way Galaxy with some really fantastic details, given you get enough time on target to collect the needed data. Some Astro Photographers spend 100s of hours collecting data with 5-minute or longer exposures. I've gotten about 1/20th of that 100+ hours so far. 😆

So here is a work-in-progress picture. It is nowhere near finished, but it was what I could get done over March.

The Rosette Nebula is an emission nebula located about 5,200 lightyears away. It is closely associated with the young open star cluster NGC 2244.

So obviously, this is a bit of Technical Science and Artist Interpretation.

Shot with a Monochrome Cooled Sensor Camera with Red (R), Green (G), Blue (B), and Luminance Filters (UV/IR). Combined LRGB and color corrected to Scientific Standards, then Stretched and Croped.

All in all, about 5 hours of exposure time. One hour for each Filter at 300 seconds and 60 seconds.

Sunrise Park Resort, AZ.

About 18 miles away by car, or 5 minutes as the crow flies. 11,100 feet elevation for the peak in the resort. Mount Baldy is just out of the picture to the right (West) with a peek elevation of 11,401 feet.

Taken with a DJI Spark Drone. Yes, they can hover pretty well at 10,000ft.

Post-processing work done in Lightroom and Photoshop.

I've been working on a new area of photography for a bit now. It's taking pictures of stuff way out there and almost always invisible to the naked eye. I've been at it for, let's say 500 of 10,000 hours, so basically, I don't know s**t yet... But I'm working diligently on getting better. To hold myself more accountable I thought I would finally start posting to my photography page (J. Chlarson Photography) a bit more often. So for the next 12 months plus, right about the first of the month, I plan to make good on that.

Here is my first official FB DSO (Deep Sky Object) posting.
