"Meet Me on Saturday"

Along with my usual crew changes and yard assists, Saturday proved to be a good day to capture several train meets. Granted, most of the "Meets" involved stationary or tied down trains, it was still neat to capture a couple trains in the same view. Although the day started out with a few clouds, remnants from Friday's storm system, most of the morning was sunny. However, as the morning turned into afternoon, another group of clouds rolled in, creating some interesting views overhead. Here's a look at Saturday's views from the office.

On my rainy Friday yard van shift, the yard manager kept me pretty busy, transporting crews out to their trains and assisting the yard jobs. Unfortunately, I didn't find many interesting photo opportunities, other than these four images. Here's a look at Friday's views from the yard van office.

"Returning to the Yard Van"

On Thursday, after a couple days of helping the Adesa Auto Auction sell some four wheel vehicles, I found myself in the seat of the Sparks yard van. During my shift, a storm front rolled in, filling the sky with some interesting clouds. I appreciated the overcast conditions for the lower temperatures and the relief of the harsh, late summer lighting. Here's a look at Thursday's views from the office.

On a smoky Wednesday morning, nine years ago this week, I captured an empty coal train heading back to the load outs in Utah. The rear of the train is rolling through the Thisbe siding and the head end is negotiating the "S" curve alongside the Truckee River. This location is just west of the Interstate 80 Orchard exit.

"Another Slow Monday"

Monday's are the slowest day of week for me in the yard van. This week, I was fortunate that a BNSF intermodel train and an empty grain train helped to offset the loss of the two eastbound UP intermodel trains that aren't on Monday's lineup. However, despite the sparse rail traffic, I managed to come up with a few interesting images from the yard van office.

Departing an hour and twenty eight minutes after the scheduled 15:37 departure time, Monday's California Zephyr #6 rolls out of the trench after its station stop and crew change. After one of the Amtrak units experienced some mechanical issues, the UP 5197 was added in Roseville, to complete the run to Chicago.

"Sunday's Views from the Yard Van Office"

Sunday's yard van shift proved to be pretty steady with several views that I don't often get to see. I took advantage of a wide open east end of the yard for way too many views of the IOANP (Intermodel, Oakland CA to North Platte NE). With the MRVSP (Manifest, Roseville CA to Sparks NV) having mechanical issues on the run across Donner Pass, that resulted in the train arriving several hours late. Since the yard manager wanted to keep the two main tracks open for the MRVSP, Amtrak #5 and the westbound z train, he opted to run the IOANP through the South Runner. That gave me the opportunity for some different angles in which to photograph the train. After the IOANP departed, I captured a few more arrivals and departures from the rail yard before calling it a day. Here's a look at Sunday's views from the yard van office.

"An Early Start to Saturday's Yard Van Shift"

I had just climbed into the crew van, when the yard manager radioed to inform me that he had a pick up for me. I replied "As soon as I get logged in, I'll head over and pick up the crew". I had just pulled up to the yard office with the crew from the LSP59 Local, when I heard the yard manager call over the radio, "Mark, I need you to go to west track 6 and help out the conductor on the MSPRV (Manifest, Sparks NV to Roseville CA)". Yeah, it was that kind of a day. šŸ˜° If the truth were known, I prefer to be busy, as it makes the day go by faster. Anyways, here's a look at Saturday's views from the office.

"A Gloomy Friday at the Office"

During Friday's yard van shift, there was a welcome change in the weather. A storm front rolled through the neighborhood, bringing some rain and twenty degree cooler temperatures. Despite the gloomy sky and the rain, I enjoyed taking pictures, from the yard, in the overcast lighting conditions. Here's a look at Friday's views from the yard van office.
