“I’ve made my way to a city that never seems to sit down long enough to know itself, where a man can pass a thousand faces and not meet a single neighbor. Back in Appalachia, we measure wealth by the quiet of the hills and the honesty of a handshake, so I reckon I brought more riches with me than this whole skyline knows what to do with.” — LCR

What’s something from home you carry with you, no matter how far you go?

“Walking through Centennial Park, I was reminded that nature and civilization have struck a peculiar bargain. One pretends to be wild while the other pretends to be wise, and both seem satisfied so long as nobody asks too many questions. The trees mind their business, the statues stand tall, and the people stroll about as if they’ve solved life, when in truth they’ve only postponed thinking about it until another day.” — LCR

“When’s the last time you slowed down long enough to notice everything around you?”

Tennessee weather check: tornado sirens or snow shovel this morning? Or both?

“The mountains taught me patience and how to keep my footing on loose rock, but they never did persuade me to stay put very long. I reckon a man owes it to himself to see what waits beyond the next ridge.” — LCR

While wandering around the old bridge in Lost Creek, headed toward Big Bottom, I found myself stepping softer than usual. I couldn’t help but wonder what life was like for the ones that crossed it, and whether they reckoned their days as ordinary as I reckon mine.

What do you think everyday life felt like here a hundred years ago?

They say on Snoopers Rock, long before sunrise chasers and camera folks, revenuers climbed that bluff with cold fingers and sharp eyes.

Down in the gorge, moonshiners kept their fires low and their prayers high. A wisp of smoke in the wrong place, and the law would come sliding down the ridge like thunder.

So the revenuers on the cliff sat quiet… watchin’, waitin’, snoopin’.

And that’s how the rock got its name.
