Found this old skull looking thing in the woods and carried it around with me for a spell. Seemed like decent company. Didn’t say much, but neither do most of the people I meet in the woods.

I put him back where I found him before sundown. Some company is best left to the forest.

Would you have kept him?

Before Cave Run Lake was a lake, there were homes, churches, roads, and whole communities down in that valley.

Then the dam came, the people left, and the water rose.

An old timer there told me that when the lake is still, you can sometimes hear a church bell ringing beneath the water.

I asked if he’d ever heard it.

He looked at the lake and said, “Not lately. And that’s what worries me. But of you hear it, you better not hang around the shore too long.”

What do you think is still down there?

There is a curious beauty about watching folks walk down to the water with the weight of yesterday upon their shoulders and come back with hope in their eyes. This lake has no power to change a man’s heart, but faith surely does.

“Come on in, the water is fine.”

I reckon I’m partial to a Tennessee sunset to call it a fair fight, but Kentucky is making a respectable attempt at winning me over.

What’s your favorite state to catch a sunset?

“There is something humbling about standing beneath a thunderstorm with a tornado turning somewhere behind it. For a few minutes, the world becomes enormous, we become very small, and all the things we thought mattered seem to have the good sense to wait.” — LCR

Ever walked through an old cemetery & realized you’re not just looking at stones… you’re standing among stories?

“A person may spend a lifetime trying to be remembered, yet here stands an old church built in 1871 that has done nothing but open its doors, and somehow it has outlived them all. Perhaps the secret to leaving a mark is not trying to carve a name in stone, but giving people a place where their stories can be written.” — LCR

Every town has a few places that remember more than we do. What’s one place that still holds the stories of your past?
