My ma and I made our annual Mother’s Day trip out to the Badlands to catch the sunrise. We were given a few moments of beautiful light and had a great morning drive. I cherish the time we get to spend together. . .Don’t worry ma, I’m not going to share our selfie haha.

All my shoots are meaningful for me but this was an especially fun and meaningful shoot for me. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to watch this young lady grow up. She’s glown up to be such a beautiful young woman. Inside and out! And even though she’s about a foot taller than me now, I will always see that little girl that wouldn’t leave my side at our family get togethers. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you Jaysa.

Here are a few of my favorites from our Cap n Gown shoot.

Finally starting to see a little color other than brown out on the prairie. Love this spot. It always makes me think of a simpler time. Maybe not simpler, but quieter at least. I also love how landscape photography has that ability to transport us like that. . .

Fire and Ice. I was struck by the color contrast in this small scene. The soft light reflecting off the canyon walls warmed up the cool tones in the shadows of this icy stream. . . .

The conditions looked great for a possible rainbow when I left my house after work a few days ago. But I never anticipated something so vivid and intense! Scroll to see the full frame of this first image and a few other frames I snapped during this wild show I caught at Bear Butte. . .

I have countless never released black and white images from the Badlands in South Dakota. I first got my start in photography shooting black and white film and often find myself reverting back to my photographic roots when I am just out exploring the Badlands with no set agenda. I’ll never go back to film but I love how Black and white photography makes me slow down and look for the subtleties in shape, shadow and light. . .
