Heroes 🌱🌸

My father had a way of counting wealth
that never involved coins.
He would point at the smoke
and say,
If you can see that from far away,
you are not lost.

Snow makes everything honest.
It covers the small messes
and reveals the big ones.
It tells you where you really walked,
not where you said you did.

Look at this valley.
A bowl of white
holding a whole community.
Tipis like steady thoughts
lined against the wind.
Horses shifting their weight
as if listening for tomorrow.

In winter, the world shrinks.
You measure distance
in breath and footsteps.
You measure time
by how long it takes
for hands to return to warmth.

That is why people gather close.
Not because they are afraid
but because they are wise.
Because they have learned
a lesson the modern world forgets.
Survival is not a solo story.

Somebody is always boiling water.
Somebody is always patching leather.
Somebody is always watching the children
while the hunters come back.
Somebody is always singing
low enough
for the snow to keep it.

The mountains look like they could swallow you,
but they do not.
They stand there
to teach respect.
To remind you
that the land is older than your plans
and patient enough
to outlast your anger.

When the camp is alive,
even the cold has to soften.
It listens to laughter
and pulls its teeth back a little.

If you have been carrying too much alone,
take a lesson from this winter road.
Walk toward the smoke.
Walk toward the voices.
Walk toward the place
where your name is not a burden
but a welcome.

Because the strongest people I knew
did not brag about endurance.
They simply made room
for one more.
