Extreme Avalanche Danger in the Ruby Mountains

The most recent snow storms in Elko County have produced approximately 3 feet of new snow in the Ruby Mountains. This snow is sitting on top of old snow that was crusted over due to the unseasonably warm weather we have had prior to this most recent series of snow storms. These conditions combined cause extremely dangerous conditions for avalanches. Ruby Mountain Heliski has been flying the Rubies and have reported numerous recent avalanches, including ones that are starting with loud noises alone. Each year the Elko County Sheriff's Office conducts Search and Rescue operations in Lamoille Canyon for victims of avalanches. Please use extreme caution if you are going to be in the Ruby Mountains and avoid steep areas where avalanches are possible.
