There are a lot of factors to keep in mind when deciding on whether or not to attempt a DIY approach to refinishing your log home. For example, appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required for media blasting, requiring a NIOSH-approved supplied-air respirator system, a heavy duty blast garment, a tow behind 350 CFM air compressor, and robust accessories to shield against high-velocity abrasive rebound and toxic dust. At Log Home Care, we equip our blasting team for success and safety, including a carbon dioxide inspection system that monitors the respirator system and will shut down equipment if air quality comes into question. Sometimes the DIY approach can save you money, but make sure it doesn’t come at a greater health cost if not properly equipped for the job.

Zoom in close on this photo and check out these logs on our recent project. Leaving bark on log cabin logs can trap moisture as bark seals dampness inside the wood. Bark is also uneven and falls off over time, inviting destructive insects and preventing proper sealing. Removing bark is essential to stop rot, allow therapeutic treatments to soak in, and let logs fit tightly together without shifting gaps.

Our crews stripped this home, removing the bark before applying the finish and breathed some life back into these logs in the process.
