A Japanese Serow (Capricornis crispus) on a steep mountain road on Honshu. Rounding a corner and coming face to face with this wholly unfamiliar creature was a highlight of the trip. Nothing is more exciting while traveling than coming across an unfamiliar creature in the wild, and this one had us all stumped for a moment. These strange looking mammals are a solitary, goat-like antelope that inhabits the steep mountainsides throughout much of Japan.

This resilient doe, who lost her leg during hunting season a few years ago is a shining example of survival and love. With the support of our neighborhood that keeps a close eye on her and a little extra TLC she has flourished and thrived! Although her fawns disappearance from last year suggested the harsh realities of nature, this year she gave birth to another baby and then adopted two orphaned twins, showing her strong maternal instinct. She is single-hoofingly raising her three adorable babies, teaching us about the true meaning of love and perseverance. I feel blessed to have captured this photo of her beautiful family.

Chimp Goes Viral at Columbus Zoo for Learning to Juggle. Visitors at the Columbus Zoo were stunned when a chimpanzee nearly perfected juggling after a week of watching a street performer practice inside the park. The juggler had been entertaining guests daily, tossing colorful balls in front of the chimp’s enclosure. By the end of the week, the chimp was copying the act, tossing rocks and sticks with surprising skill.

When asked about it, the juggler laughed and said, “Most people have to worry about AI taking their jobs. Turns out I have to worry about chimps.”

The touching story of Mukhtar, often celebrated as the “Hachiko of Crimea,” stands as a powerful testament to animal loyalty and devotion.

For over twelve years, the faithful dog remained a permanent fixture on the Black Sea embankment in Yalta, scanning the crowds for his owner—a local beach lifeguard who tragically drowned during a water rescue in 2011.

Mukhtar refused to leave the shoreline, returning to the exact same spots every day in hopes of a reunion that would never come.

Over the years, Mukhtar grew into a beloved symbol of the city, cared for by locals and tourists alike who were moved by his story.

He eventually formed a unique bond with Viktor Malinovsky, a local street trumpeter who frequented the embankment.

Mukhtar would sit beside the musician and literally "sing along" by howling in harmony with the music, showing a distinct fondness for classics like Frank Sinatra’s Strangers in the Night.

Following Mukhtar's passing in August 2023 at the age of 14, the local administration honored the community's wishes by approving a permanent bronze monument on the Yalta embankment, ensuring his legacy of absolute devotion is preserved precisely where he spent his life waiting.
