While checking my UV lights last night, I came across this beauty....she's a White-Banded Fishing Spider (Dolomedes albineus).
She's about 2.5 inches long and these huge spiders are quite docile. The eye area in this species is elevated above the rest of the face, which can be seen in the second image.

Every day I feel blessed to be able to spend time in Nature.
This Mary Oliver poem expresses my feelings so well.

"Mary Oliver was an American poet and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. She found inspiration for her work in nature and had a lifelong habit of solitary walks in the wild. Her poetry is characterized by wonderment at the natural environment, vivid imagery, and unadorned language."

A documentary of her life "Saved by the Beauty of the World" will premier in August. Looking forward to watching!

This is a White-Lined Sphinx moth in our garden last night. It's a large moth with a 3 inch wingspan.
Sometimes called the Hummingbird moth, this beauty nectars on night blooming flowers while hovering by utilizing wing beats of up to 70 times per second!
In our garden, we see them during summer nights sipping nectar from the Soapwort Flowers. They arrive from the southern US in two waves, which incidentally coincide with the Soapwort blooms.
Photographing this one is a challenge...I was using camera mounted LED lights and a calm approach to prevent scaring it off.
I've slowed the video so you can see the wing flaps, and you can also faintly hear the wing movement.
Last night about 11:30.
