Quote from the story: “This is not going to strengthen the Forest Service, it is going to weaken it,” Bonnie said. “It’s not about solving problems, it’s about blowing things up.”

None of the farm groups want this. No one in conservation wants this. Nobody.

In the Trump administration’s reorganization of the struggling agency, painful echoes of BLM’s past moves.

By manipulating animals to do wonderful things, we may become numb to their real wonder.

Unbelievable. Every photographer and picture editor.

When I was a newsroom graphics/design editor I would review the front pages of newspapers from across the country on a daily basis. Today’s MST has some pretty powerful photojournalism.

Sad. If you have ever been to Juneau, you most likely went to see the Mendenhall Glacier. I wonder how long it will take before it is out of view.

Scientists say that means the glacier has entered a new phase of its retreat.

Fascinating and very cool.

Fascinating and very cool.

Scientists used tiny new sensors to follow the insects on journeys that take thousands of miles to their winter colonies in Mexico.

With all the craziness in the world these days, I thought a moment of peaceful zen would be a nice change. I hope you enjoy this one-minute video that I recently made of South Fork Falls, also known as Barbara Falls, near Eagle River, Alaska.

While Carol and I were rolling about in the Bering Sea (more about that in a future blog post), the house wrens in our backyard bird box hatched and fledged.

Luckily, a two-camera video setup captured the action. Check out this compilation video that I created, showing the process from selecting a home and moving in, to moving out. There were a total of seven eggs laid, with the first one laid around Mother’s Day. The last bird fledged about a month later.

Time to put the 'For Rent' sign up again.

Sad, disturbing, and disgusting.

Sad, disturbing, and disgusting.

Seabirds have been fishing plastic from the ocean and feeding it to their chicks, researchers say. One bird was found to have ingested nearly 800 pieces.

I suddenly feel old after seeing and hearing this video.

I can remember the teletypes clanking away, day and night, and the many feet of copy they printed, in the room full of these machines at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat where I worked in the 1970s and 1980s.

Hearing the never-ending sound of a teletype is peaceful to me. It's a sound that could easily lull one to sleep. It must be a journalist thing.😄

Happy Mother's Day to all creatures big and small.

This video from our backyard nesting box shows a northern house wren on her eggs, two of which she laid just this morning on Mother's Day.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a Northern house wren’s clutch size ranges from 3-10 eggs with an incubation period of 9-16 days, followed by a nestling period of 15-17 days. It’s going to be a busy month!
