Last Saturday, hundreds of people came out to Comer Cox Park for Springfield’s Survival Revival: Survival Springfield, Reviving Resistance, Rebuilding Power.

There was free food (both BBQ and vegan), live entertainment, including two young local dance crews, and dozens of community tents from 40 organizations across Springfield. There were kids playing basketball and in the splash pad. There were feminine products, narcan, native plants and produce, t-shirts, tambourines, face paint, bubbles and more - all for free, for all to enjoy.

Over the course of the day, community members built a ribbon memorial honoring loved ones who have passed on and their legacies we carry forward. Leaders from Black Lives Matter SPI and the Sonya Massey Commission taught us about qualified immunity and holding our government accountable. Together, we claimed that democracy is a matter of survival.

I have no doubt that it was a great night last night. Unfortunately I had to miss it but my beautiful fiancé Ashlyn covered for me and did an amazing job! She told me she loved doing it and she felt great doing photography again. Love that!

See y’all next week for our double header. Just in case you forgot there will be 2 concerts. 1 Thursday like normal then again on Friday!! Going out with a bang!

Sometimes the most beautiful growth happens on the inside.

It happens quietly.
In the way you think.
In the things you finally let go of.
In the boundaries you learn to set.
In the person you’re becoming when nobody is watching.

And eventually, what’s been growing inside of you starts to show on the outside.

That was the idea behind these images.

To make inner growth visible.

The flowers aren’t something she’s holding. They aren’t just placed around her.

They’re growing from her.

Because sometimes becoming who you’re meant to be requires growing through some things first.

And growth isn’t always pretty while it’s happening… it’s not always something you can smile at.

Photography is fun when you can make something beautiful. But I love it even more when I can make an idea mean something.

My goal yesterday was to the farmers market to get some GF stuff for Ashlyn and come on back home. But when I got down there I seen all these people! It felt like a different place. Downtown was alive! Thats when I found out the Big Boy train was coming through. I didn’t even have my camera on me 🤦🏽‍♂️ I had to run home then come back.

I know some people were probably thinking… it’s just a train 🤷🏽‍♂️.

But nah. Not this one.

This is Big Boy No. 4014, the largest operating steam train in the world and the only Big Boy still operating today. Only 25 of these huge trains were ever built.

And we got to stand right here in Springfield, Illinois, and watch one come rolling through our city.

I think what I loved just as much as seeing the train was seeing all the people who came out to experience it. People lined up along the tracks, cameras and phones ready, kids waiting to see something they might not ever see again, and people who actually remember when steam trains were a much bigger part of American life.

Sometimes history sits behind glass at a museum but for a few minutes yesterday, history came rolling right through Springfield.

Im glad I went back to grab my camera!

Last night was a great night!

I had to cover 40 under 40 for IL times so I missed a little of the beginning. My beautiful fiancé helped me out and covered for me until I got there.

I loved seeing all the dancing and smiles. I think my favorite part of the night is when a little boy showed interest in my camera and we had a little moment last night. I don’t if he will have this memory forever but I know I will! He was a cool little guy!
