I’ve been spending a lot of time with seniors this Fall (senior sessions are among my favorite!), and it’s reinforced my belief that we’re going to be ok. These kids are wicked smart, creative, hilarious, and ready to lead.

They’re also so much fun to photograph.

Take care.

This was just a moment between poses when I decided to push the button, not for a portrait to add to a client’s gallery, but just because I could see through the viewfinder that it was the kind of image I would want. I think that’s important to stay inspired and creative.

I would normally process an image like this in black-and-white only, but who could resist that sunset?

It’s the season of hugging. Not only because of the loving families I get to photograph, but because it’s finally cool enough in St. Louis to hug each other outside.
So go outside and hug somebody!

I’ve learned that, just like my kids, other people’s kids enjoy pushing buttons on the camera more than they enjoy being in front of the camera. So it’s no surprise that during just about every family session I shoot, the kids end up holding my camera and pushing buttons at some point during the session. I always enjoy seeing these images that the kids made when reviewing the images from a session; they often have a better, more honest perspective than I do.

This is a snapshot of me, made by a four-year-old big brother at a recent family session. It’s helpful to see what the photographer looks like through a four-year-old’s eyes. And he even managed to get the family cat, Ricky, in the shot!

No matter with whom I’m photographing I try to set aside a few frames, just for me. You might call them out-takes, although they’re intentional.

For this little series, I wanted just a mother comforting her crying newborn baby. I chose to make the mother and baby out-of-focus next to the window with the baby looking out at the light, because if you’ve had a newborn baby you know everything is out-of-focus for a bit, but there’s always hope.

It’s always an honor when a family invites me into their home, and it reminds me of how grateful I am to do what I do.

Especially when their pup also welcomes me with a wag.

I love portraits in May, and I love senior portrait sessions. So naturally, senior portrait sessions in May are a personal favorite. It’s the last chance before graduation to capture images of seniors just as they are before they go off into the world.

I love it so much that this year I’m offering a free large format, fine art print of your choice from your gallery for any senior portrait session booked in May.

Call, email or message me for details before my May calendar is booked up! I’m excited about offering this, so share it with all the seniors in your life!

Take care.
Josh
