Springs almost over, I’ve been a part of so many beautiful wedding days. I’m so thankful for you all! While I comb through the thousands of photos I’ve taken so far this year, I smile just seeing the warmth of each day. Every wedding is so unique. You are all so loved. I feel so lucky to witness it all !

One of the biggest reasons wedding galleries feel disconnected is because couples spent their entire day being managed for a photo, or moving to the next location, instead of living it. You can see it in photos when people never got a second to breathe, because there is no room for hugs, long dinner convos, laughter, or the emotional moments. You’re just running from one thing to the next, and only have time for the posed pic, no time to just be in your day

That’s what I loved about Elizabeth and Keagan’s wedding. It was built around spending time with everyone, in her parent’s backyard. A beautiful evening ceremony, cocktail hour watching the Kentucky derby, and followed by a 2 hour dinner with plenty of time to chat, reminisce and be together

I think couples are way less worried about the photos themselves. I think they’re more worried about feeling awkward, or rushed. Or they don’t want their whole wedding day turned into a photoshoot. They’re probably worried about somebody taking over the energy of the day, being constantly pulled away from people they love. About not knowing what to do with their hands for 8 hours haha

Your photographer is around you almost your entire wedding day. There are very few vendors who are that close to you for that many hours while emotions are high and things are moving fast. Photos matter a great deal, obviously. But I also think people are choosing based on who makes them feel calm or safe to be themselves. And someone who notices things without forcing them. Somebody that can handle pressure without spreading stress to everyone else.

I don’t ever want my couples feeling like they have to perform for the camera. The experience of your wedding day comes first always, and the photos come from that. The best photos happen when people feel comfortable enough to forget about the camera for a second and just be where they are

I think one of the biggest things I keep in mind while photographing a wedding day is whether the photos will still feel good to look at 20 years from now. I just want it to feel true to the couple, and that is what is “timeless” to me

If you want to remember your day forever, you have to set your day up to do so. If the timeline gets packed, you’re told where to be, what to do, when to smile, when to laugh, when to move on. everything is planned to look good, not to actually feel like anything, and you spend more time being directed than just being a part of your wedding. None of it feels wrong in the moment. it feels normal. like this is just what weddings are supposed to be, but later when you look back, those are the moments you have. the posed ones. the ones you were told to do, and not the way it actually felt to be in it! If you care about remembering your day the way it felt, it can’t revolve around being photographed. it has to leave room for you to actually live in it

You think you’ll remember your wedding day exactly how it happened, like how it felt and all the in between, but memory doesn’t actually hold onto things the way we think it does.

It kind of simplifies everything and fills in gaps and ends up leaning on whatever was documented, so when your day is built around timelines and shot lists and making sure everything looks “right,” those are the things that become memory, not how it actually felt to be there, not the way your people were around you. Over time, your memory starts to match what was captured.

This is why how your wedding is documented matters more than you realize, because it’s not just about having photos, it’s about protecting the accuracy of the memory you’ll carry with you forever.

there really isn’t anything more special than being at home, but no one believes that at first. Most think it’s too boring or messy. Like why would we take photos in what we think is the mundane. But then years go by and your house looks different, your kids are suddenly walking and talking, or you move! The way your life felt in that space just isn’t the same anymore, and you realize you don’t actually remember it the way you thought you would

The location we choose isn’t what makes your photos feel special. It’s easy to pick a pretty park and assume that’s enough, but it’s not really about the park itself. Where is the light is hitting, what’s actually blooming that week, even something as small as the color of the grass (Missouri has a ton of neon grass) Things change fast! That’s half my job. Driving around forest park, Busch wildlife, Lafayette square, etc. noticing what’s changed, and finding those things that actually make your photos feel something.

Jordan didn’t even have to see her gallery to know which ones would be her favorites. The flower photos, of course.

It’s always worth finding something different, even if it’s the same park everyone goes to. I am never showing up and doing the same thing twice, copy and paste. Because you’re not the same as everyone else. The photos always come out different

9/10 couples will tell me they are awkward in photos. I love hearing this since I always get to prove them wrong. You’re not awkward, you’ve just never been in front of a camera in a way that actually feels natural. You’ve either been told to just act normal, but what does that even mean when there’s a camera on you. or you’ve been put into stiff poses that don’t feel like you at all. So then the overthinking creeps in.. What do I do with my hands, is my smile weird, am I standing weird. And the more you think about it, the worse it feels and that is where the “awkward” feeling comes from. It’s not you, it’s just the situation you’ve been put in. You don’t need to practice or be better in photos. You just need to feel comfortable enough to stop thinking about it, distracted.

I’ll give you just enough direction so you’re not standing there wondering what to do, but I’m not going to make you perform or control every second. I’ll help you just enough to get you out of your head, and that is when it actually starts to feel like you.
