“Food Photography is Fun!”
It’s a quiet, snowy Sunday night here in the Midwest. The house is warm, the TV hums softly in the background, and a major snowstorm is rolling in. Mom’s tucked on the couch, engrossed in her show, while I’m in the kitchen with a mission: comfort food to last us through the storm.
Tonight’s menu? Gumbo and chili—two classics, seasoned to perfection.
First, the gumbo: It’s a rich, savory pot filled with shrimp, chicken, and andouille sausage. The roux came out perfectly—golden, smooth, and packed with flavor. You can see the tender strings of chicken, vibrant bits of tomato, and fresh okra peeking through the broth. The aroma fills the house, wrapping us in its warm, comforting embrace. (Check out the photo—doesn’t it look mmm-mmm good?)
Then there’s the chili: I’m a “more meat than beans” kind of person, and this batch is just how I like it. Thick, hearty, and glistening under the kitchen light. The ground beef, tomato paste, and spices blend together perfectly, creating a pot of rich, meaty goodness. The second picture says it all—every glisten, every chunk, every swirl of seasoning.
After hours of cooking, I’ve got six quart bags of gumbo in the freezer and one in the fridge. The chili? Four quart bags, ready to keep us warm and well-fed while the storm does its thing.
Food photography is fun because it’s not just about capturing the dish; it’s about telling the story behind it. The warmth of the kitchen, the quiet hum of family time, and the joy of preparing something that will nourish us during the long, snowy week ahead.
What’s your go-to snowstorm meal?
