Went to the desert armed with my Nikon F5 and a few (12) rolls of film.

This trip was my first time shooting on ILFORD PHOTO (Official Page) Ortho+, a black and white film with greater sensitivity to red. I thought it would be perfect for the desert, but I really can't tell a difference between it and FP4+. I had to edit the shadows pretty heavily to get the expected results. Perhaps it was the location, there was more greenery here than you might think. I don't want to dismiss it entirely, maybe next time the desert calls to me I'll pick some up.

I only shot one roll of B&W and waiting on slide and color negative films to get back. Until a major landscape post, enjoy these cropped shots.

Shot on a Nikon F5 with a 24-120mm f/4 lens on Ilford Ortho+.

First shots with the F5. Boy, what a camera! It’s heavy, fast, and reliable. Black and White film isn’t pushing its meter to what it can do, and the snow throws off the white balance, but these are by far the best film photos I’ve ever gotten in the snow. Are these the best photos I’ve ever taken? God no, but it sure felt good taking them.

But otherwise? I don’t see a difference between this professional camera and my Nikon FE, an enthusiast camera. The F5 will always give me perfect photos, no doubt about it, but so will a Leica M6, a Canon AE-1, or a Contax T2 if you know what you’re doing. Using the F5 is a reminder that the having the best camera and the best lenses means nothing if you don’t have the talent. Shooting new subjects, enjoying the process, and learning more is what photography should be about.

Taken on a Nikon F5 with both an 85mm f/1.8 and a 24-120mm f/4 lenses on Ilford FP4.
