Part 5:

Even our exit was an experience. This is the door to the elevator we took back to the first floor. Along with the vitality of a growing flower, a dose of confusion, and the soulful sounds of Mongolian yodeling elevator music (not making this up) stuck in my head, I left with the following perspective:

We’re all living mosaics using pieces of our experiences to create the image of who we are. Each of those pieces reflects the light within us, and in a world full of darkness, bringing our lights together saves us from being consumed. As the African proverb goes, I saw . I could see her mosaic, and I wanted to be a part of her image and for her to be a part of mine. I wanted the possibility to use our pieces to build ourselves into a new image.

Just like those mirror shards, it’s easy to see yourself in so many different people, places, and things, but think carefully about where you get the pieces you take with you. I got lucky and chose wisely.

Part 4:

After discussing Khalifa Qattan’s art, history human relations, love, religion, and the Universe... It got real deep. We were put in a room where the art simulated a trip through space. The visuals and the music were entrancing. Flashing lights, glow in the dark effects, all kinds of sci-fi sounds. It was intense. Almost like my brain was being sifted and thoughts, questions and answers just emerged. Then, I had a dream that night.

I was a cluster of stars chasing another cluster through space past all kinds of other celestial bodies. I eventually caught up with the other cluster and we merged.

Made me look at life a little differently. Everything is starting to look mosaicked.

Part 3:

Alongside her daughter, Lidia Qattan, owns and operates The Mirror House. She told us the story of how she built the house with her late husband, and detailed life in Kuwait mid 20th Century. Her storytelling had us like mice to the piper. As the big personality boomed louder and louder from the little Italian expat, the house gave use crazier and crazier surprises.

This picture was taken as Lidia instructed us to give our astrological signs for that room’s surprise.

I won’t give too many details outside my main one. If you ever get to the Middle East, you simply need to visit.

Part 2:

If you noticed the shimmering in the last picture, then you’ve probably deduced why this place is called ‘The Mirror House.’

After a zip through the city courtesy of our good friend, Ahmed, we hopped out into the heat of the Kuwait sun reflected onto us by this building covered in mosaic images made from different shards of glass (broken mirrors to be exact). Arabic words, doves, a unicorn?, and whole nature scenes... The art covering the walls inside and out gave life to the building. We stepped into the belly of the late Khalifa Qattan’s art, and little did we know that our minds were about to be digested.

First we met Qattan’s daughter in the gift shop before she gathered us to tour the house. The tour started with soft opening of snacks and drinks in the sitting room (1st picture). She told us all about the normal museum stuff like the history of the building, the room we were in, the kitchen (which is also covered in mosaics), artist technique, etc. Walking through the halls, seeing the art move, and seeing yourself within the art was all a mesmerizing experience.

*Long caption, but interesting if you like stories*

One thing I love about film is the process I’ve fallen into from the shutter click to picture on screen. Partially because I’m lazy and partially because I tend to develop pictures at a moment where the feelings they give off are able to benefit me most, I often wait on developing rolls from months or even years.

Those pictures then come with all kinds of nudges of emotion. This picture is of the Kuwait Mirror house.

I always knew I wanted to marry , but how that was going to happen and how I wanted to articulate my feelings seemed impossible for me to do until I came here a year and a half ago with a few other unsuspecting English teachers. If you’re up for a story, let me show and tell you how we took a crazy journey from the deserts of Kuwait to space and beyond.
