Leatherwood Creek in the Pioneer Forest of Shannon County has a lot of beautiful geology along this small waterway that dumps into the Jacks Fork River. Some more work for the LAD Foundation.

One of the cool things about my work with the LAD Foundation this year is it has taken me to some beautiful landscapes in Missouri and through some fantastic forests that have been largely untouched by modern development. But for centuries, people have called these hills and hollers home. And I've been able to experience some great pieces of history.

More recent historical locations have included places such as Bluff School, one of the six one-room schoolhouses that were once used along the banks of the Current River between Montauk & Akers. This school is on the LAD Foundation's Pioneer Forest land and the land is open to the public. It's a really cool piece of history tucked just off the banks of the clear waters of the Current. Definitely a spot worthy of a stop next time you're floating by or riding horses to.

Another photo of the camping cabin at near Jadwin, Missouri. Had a perfect night sleep with much-needed AC after a long day hiking in the Pioneer Forest, a comfy bed and all the stars to take in.

I've been out in the Missouri Ozarks a lot this year. When I am needing a place to stay, I look to Big Rock Candy Mountain near Jadwin for camping and cabins. Stayed in this camper cabin a few weeks ago and it was fantastic! Plus, they've got a pool on site, are just up the hill from the Ozark National Scenic Riverways and have one of the best restaurants in the state with the Big Chill Bar 'n Grill right on site. Gotta get the nachos!

Check em out at to book your next trip to the Current River.

A foggy summer morning in the Pioneer Forest above the Jacks Fork River. This stretch of forest is near Summersville and Mountain View in Shannon County, Missouri. Love to see all these healthy, big oak trees.

This stretch of beautiful forest is a part of the Pioneer Forest above Leatherwood Creek in Shannon County, Missouri. The area had a true wilderness feel with hardly any trails or human impact. Just gorgeous oak-hickory forests mixed with native shortleaf pines. The geology of this area shines as well with many moss-covered boulders and fern-lined cliffs. Another great piece of natural beauty preserved and managed by the LAD Foundation.

Same viewpoint as my last point of Chalk Bluff, but viewed down the other bend of the Jacks Fork River. This is above Pioneer Forest, which is managed by the LAD Foundation. It's public land and you can go visit it too. Can't thank the LAD Foundation enough for preserving views like for everyone to take in.

Love these gnarly, old cedars and sprouting shortleaf pines atop Chalk Bluff. Really cool to see Missouri's two native evergreens growing next to each other at such a remarkable bluff view of the Jacks Fork River. A truly special spot in the Pioneer Forest of Shannon County.
