In the past year, Charlie and Saxy have developed a gentle sweetness between them. They stand together for hours, share piles of hay, softly touch noses, and follow each other around their pen. There is a deep, knowing wisdom between them. Perhaps they too sense that their time together in their physical bodies is coming to a close. They know to soak up every moment, every instance of quiet togetherness, before Saxy becomes spirit, all air and energy and love around us, and “togetherness” takes on a new meaning. They've always known this, and we could all learn from them.

I’m trying to capture this season and the energy of their friendship. Maybe by the time summer is over, I’ll have been successful. Maybe all the time we have spent together acknowledging the truth of what has been, and what lies ahead, will culminate in something that shows what it is to care as authentically as these two care for one another.

Their hearts beat at around 1,200 beats per minute, and their wings beat 53 times per second while in flight. They weigh as much as a penny and build their tiny nests out of wishes (dandelion fluffs) and dreams (spider web silk) with a lichen exterior for camoflague. The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird species who breeds east of the Mississippi. This week, several have chosen to grace me with their presence, both near the feeder that I maintain for them, as well as several earlier this weekend in the woods of western Maine where we were camping.

Yesterday while out on a birding hike, we felt so fortunate to spot this gorgeous fisher! These amazing critters are solitary, shy, and often noctural this time of year, so getting to observe one was a real treat. This cutie knew we were there, and kept its distance, and we stood quietly and watched. These photos were taken on my long zoom lens that I use for birds and wildlife, and were cropped heavily in post-production. While the quality isn't perfect, I thought they were too fun not to share!

Tonight, while out on a birding walk, I happened to be in the right place, at the right time. I said hello to Emily and Vanessa, and their dogs Arlo and Koda, and they tearfully told me that they would be saying goodbye to Arlo tomorrow. I offered to take some photos, and they accepted.

It is so clear how much Arlo loves his family, and how much they love him. He has the biggest smile and the sweetest eyes. He leaned in for snuggles and gave countless kisses. Even though Arlo's body is struggling, his spirit is all joy.

Thank you Emily, Vanessa, and Koda for sharing Arlo with me for a few golden moments tonight. Thank you for trusting a stranger, for sharing your tears, and for letting me see you. Arlo is so lucky to have you, and you are so lucky to have been loved by him. 🐾💖

I met Ann, Scott, and their sweet girl Cheyenne for a Forget-Me-Not session in the Friday afternoon sunshine. Cheyenne believes that all visitors to their home are there to become her best friend (obviously), and she welcomed me warmly. Ann and Scott met Cheyenne about five years ago after she'd been picked up by animal control and brought to the shelter because she was so thin and ill. She had Lyme, pneumonia, and a uterine infection, but even with all that, she was incredibly sweet. Although they started out as her foster parents, nursing her back to health, it soon became clear that Cheyenne was home forever. They adopted Cheyenne and the rest was history.

Five years later, you'd never know that this kindhearted dog came from such a rough beginning. She trotted around the yard, showed me her pond and how much she loves to swim, rolled in the dirt, and she snuggled with her favorite humans. What a life!

Thank you Ann, Scott, and Cheyenne for welcoming me to your home and for the pleasure of taking photos for you. It was an honor 🐾💖

Safety. You know it when you feel it. There's a sense of warm relief, a gentle knowing, a quiet peace.

The staff at the MSSPA work day in and day out to give their equine residents the sense of safety they all deserve. Not every equine who arrives here has experienced poor treatment. Some were surrendered by owners who knew they couldn't care for them any longer. Others were born here after their mothers were rescued. Some have known the worst that humanity has to offer.

But once they're here? They all know they are safe.

I'm honored to be a 2026 Focus on the Farm volunteer photographer for the MSSPA.

I don’t know how this photographer ended up with such a photogenic dog, but I’m not mad about it! 😅 I did teach her to pose, which I’m sure doesn’t hurt.

When I talk about my little Lexi Lemon, and I say that she is the light in my life and the joy in my days, I'm not exaggerating. This little nugget brings me so much happiness. When I photograph your dog, and I tell you I understand that kind of love, I mean it. This little ray of sunshine has my whole heart.
