Dr. Cynthia Sapp IPC Featured Photographer
By Richard Terpolilli as told by Cynthia Sapp

Cynthia was born and raised in Los Angeles, Ca. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist earning her Bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University and her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from Biola University in Los Angeles, Ca. Cynthia completed her Doctoral Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center and was later appointed Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. She is currently in private practice in Mooresville. Cynthia and her husband Darrell, have been married for
36 years and have two children, Clayton and Lauren. They recently welcomed their first granddaughter, Oakleigh.

Photographer’s Statement

Cynthia is a self-taught photographer with only three years’
experience. She readily admits to, “knowing nothing about the
camera,” leading her to Dixon Handshaw’s class on the Introductionto Photography. In that short time, Cynthia was awarded third place in the Mooresville Arts 2025 Annual Photography Competition.

Her primary interests include street photography, environmental
portraiture, and social documentary. With her background in
psychology, she is instinctively drawn to people living their daily lives and capturing images that show something compelling about the human condition. Cynthia is unique in that it’s not always about getting the shot. She prides herself on engaging with the subject, mostly strangers, before photographing, thereby creating an emotional connection between them. Cynthia often shoots in Burst mode to follow subtle shifts in expression and movement.

Artistic Statement

Cynthia is deeply inspired by Vivian Maier, widely considered one of the greatest 20th-century street photographers. She is best known for her candid, empathetic black-and-white photographs of people from everyday life across the streets of Chicago and New York. Maier’s work motivates Cynthia to chase the same quality in her own work. That is, exploring without expectation or judgement, people or scenes that reveal some truth about our shared humanity.

With almost absurd curiosity, she moves between participant and observer, sometimes stepping into the frame and other times staying on the edge. She then waits for the story to unfold, one eye watching through the viewfinder, the other staying alert to what is unfolding just beyond.

Brent White IPC Featured Photographer
By Richard Terpolilli
Brent is a native North Carolinian raised in Greensboro.
He attended Clemson University majoring in computer
engineering. Currently Brent is the Senior Software
Engineer at Momentec - Badger Sports, Brand Athletic
Ware. Helping him getting started with his
photography, Brent has taken two courses at Mitchell
College under Chuck Adams. Brent and
his wife Dana have been married for 12 years.

Photographers Statement
Brent’s introduction into photography started as a
youngster while living in North Dakota, drawing
inspiration from his father. He cherishes the memories
of just, “taking a walk with dad” simply giving him the
opportunities to practice and capture those great
memories. Brent explains, “Our whole family has
experienced more together because of my
photography. We found comfort and joy together in our
private sanctuary.”

Brent’s first camera was a Sears 110 vintage, compact
"pocket" camera from the 1970s, designed for 110
cartridge film. It offered me a simple "universal" (fixed)
focus and manual film advancement, making it ideal
for casual, nostalgic photography. One of Brent’s
fondest memories was with his mom in 2003 where
they visited the Outer Banks. It was here where Brent
became captivated with lighthouses, and made it his
obsession to continue photographing these lifesaving
watchtowers. His excitement comes through when he
finally photographed all the lighthouses on the Outer
Banks.

“Looking through the lens seeing lighthouses stand
firm against crashing waves gives me an emotional
response of awe, as a beacon that makes the ocean
feel less intimidating.”

Brent’s other interests are photographing Christmas
Lights. It’s the time of the year where the joy of the
season is expressed through creativity, originality and
nostalgia.

Artistic Expression
“As a hobby the camera gives me the freedom to
create the pictures I want without any restrictions. I
can take the time to experiment with all sorts of
techniques and learn in my own time without worry of
pleasing anyone, except myself. Photography makes
me more observant and aware of the little things that
surround me each day.”

Brent explains. “There was our cross country trip
through the Canadian Rockies that brings back fond
memories. Photographing those personal moments
helps connect me to what I’m feeling when I release
the shutter. The Majesty of those mountains belong to
everyone, but when we were there, with my camera,
the mountains belong to me. Images from that trip
awakens the feelings, sounds, and smells of the
moment. My Photographs are telling my family’s
unwritten stories and giving them a gift of
remembrance.” From those experiences Brent has
made a self published book looking through his lens
providing lasting memories for his family.
