When Nancy asked me to be part of her wedding day last winter, I absolutely had to say yes. I've known Nancy a long time and her energy and intrepidness make this world a better place. I knew that whoever walked alongside Nancy in that journey must be someone special. I was right. Congratulation Jed and Nancy!

Does anyone ever really know how much they've touched the people around them? Do we spend enough time telling people what they mean to us, really?

Sometimes I think we should eulogize the living; write all the kind things we'd put in an obituary in a cocktail napkin while we wait for our table at a restaurant. Host processionals for the people we love on any given Tuesday. But cocktail napkins are rarely big enough and funeral processions are disruptive to the flow of traffic. Best to save those for special occasions -- and special people.

Sean Garner is such a man. He lived his life making sure the people he around him felt seen -- going out of his way to be thoughtful and tender, playful and jovial, stubborn, and good-naturedly competitive. An uncle, father, friend, and fiancé, Sean made sure everyone he met got their own special piece of him and no relationship was replicable.

He was a dedicated fire engine mechanic, and earned a reputation for being one of the best in the state. Sean seemingly knew everyone -- and couldn't travel outside of Missoula (whether to Miles City or Las Vegas or Cheyenne, Wyo) without meeting a friend. Hundreds of firefighters and emergency service personnel from around Montana paid their respects yesterday.

I was honored by his family to be asked to photograph his memorial service. Montana lost a good one. He can never be replaced but will always be remembered.

What's my favorite thing about being a photographer? So glad you asked, can't wait to tell you. It's watching my friend's lives change and expand through my camera lens. I met Becky Luthje two years ago when she was almost a newlywed and now she's welcomed a new baby into her life.

I'm so glad I got to document what life is like for Becky and Tim on their 1400 acre cattle ranch in Philipsburg, all tucked in cozy with a newborn. Tim gets up at 6:30 to tend to the cattle, and they work on their homestead, but other than that life is sweet and slow moving in the early days of their baby's life.

Leighton Luthje, I braved the snowy roads of Philipsburg to meet you, and you were worth every bit. Thank you for being so precious.

Sometimes loving ourselves means challenging conventions.

"There's an aging female archetype that I don't fit -- that I don't want to fit," Nancy told me during her bo***ir session.

So she unpacked fishnets, boots, a whip, a tight T-shirt with the word "w***e" on it, a neon mask, sunglasses, pasties, cupcakes, a hat with furry ears.

No one puts Nancy in a box, and that's what everyone loves about her.

Okay, story time: I met Anya at a photoshoot for her company last summer and we sort of hit it off so we became social media friends. A few weeks later, I was celebrating my birthday at one of my favorite birthday restaurants (the kind with fire where they throw things at your mouth and give you free drinks) and looked up to see her walk past, so I whipped out my phone and scrolled Facebook to see if it happened to be her birthday too.

Sure it would have made more sense to approach her and ask if it was her birthday, but I'm awkward and this seemed easier. DON'T JUDGE.

Anyway, I learned that it was in fact Anya's birthday, so now we not only have similar personalities but we are also birthday twins with excellent taste in restaurants. WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?

However, I did not mention any of this to Anya, just kept it to myself like a weirdo. Like I said, awkward.

Fast forward to two weeks ago and Anya books a bo***ir session with me. It was so fun because SHE is such fun and we talked and laughed and marveled at her impressive shoe collection. And then I was like, "Oh hey, did you know we have the same birthday AND went to the same restaurant with our respective families AND I've been keeping that to myself for six months?"

Anya is an excellent example of someone who loves herself fully and you should definitely go follow her for some inspiration, ladies.

One time I was listening to a Christian talk radio show (idk) and the pundit started laying into “narcissistic women who take selfies.” This was circa 2015, when I had just begun to experience confidence for the first time in my life and was, in fact, taking quite a few selfies. I felt a small ripple of shame before I realized that the only people who win when I lack confidence is insecure men.

To the ladies reading this: Please take the selfie. Please get dolled up (or not) to plant yourself in front of a light source like an open window (but not too close), turn that camera around, and press the shutter.

I want to see your faces.

Especially today. It’s Valentine’s Day, so show up for yourself with that Rom-Com main character energy you usually give to everyone else. Lean into that sexy, romantic, passionate, playful, funny, creative, interesting part of yourself. Full disclosure: I work from home, I’m going nowhere today but I did this because it makes me feel good.

Maybe if we keep deciding that we matter more than the opinions of insecure men they will finally realize that they can feel better about themselves by going to therapy instead of putting us down on talk radio. 👏🏼🫦💃🏻
