Shooting Event Details with the Canon R5, RF 15-35mm 2.8L, & the Godox V1

10/05/2026

Another event, same process. 📸

After I photograph the outside of the venue, I move inside and photograph the decorated room.

This is where my Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8 L really shines. The wide focal length lets me capture the room, details, and overall setup in a way that gives the viewer a sense of the entire space.

These images may not be the main event, but they help tell the story of the whole event.

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 is my go-to lens for photographing people in front of backdrops at events. 📸

The 35mm focal length is perfect for full-body portraits, giving me enough room to capture the person and the backdrop without having to stand too far away.

And because it’s a prime lens, I get a consistent look from one shot to the next. The sharpness, color, and overall image quality make it a great choice for this type of photography.

It’s another example of why this little lens continues to earn its place in my camera bag.

Two lenses. Almost everything I need for event photography. 📸

For my last two events, the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 and RF 70-200mm f/2.8L Z have been my go-to combination.

The 35mm handles just about everything up close: details, food, photos in front of backdrops, and portraits when guests arrive. Plus, its macro capabilities make it incredibly versatile.

The 70-200mm takes over when the action starts. It’s perfect for candid, off-guard moments, award presentations, and speeches, all while letting me capture moments without getting in the way.

Together, these two lenses give me the flexibility to tell the entire story of an event.

When you’re holding a camera for hours, ergonomics matter. 📸

The Canon R5 fits perfectly in my hands, and I love the placement of the dials for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. When you’re shooting all day, having controls exactly where you expect them makes a big difference.

That’s one of the main reasons I chose the R6 Mark II as my second camera. Its ergonomics are remarkably similar to the R5, making it easy to switch between the two.

When you’re shooting with two cameras, muscle memory is everything. I don’t have to think about where the controls are or adjust to a completely different layout. I can focus on capturing the moment.

For me, that familiarity was the deciding factor in choosing the R6 Mark II.

I’m doing some research for a YouTube video on why I chose the Canon R6 Mark II—and why I’m sticking with it. 📸

And honestly, my research has made the decision more interesting.

There are some amazing Canon cameras around the $2,000 price point, especially with the release of the R8 Mark II.

That means there are some real choices to consider if you’re shopping in this range.

So why did I choose the R6 Mark II, and what keeps me from switching?

That’s what I’m digging into for the video. 👀

One feature that keeps the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 in my camera bag? It’s a macro lens. 📸

That makes it incredibly useful at events when I want to capture all those little details that help tell the story.

A beautiful strawberry, the details on a table, decorations, rings, or anything else that deserves a closer look—the RF 35mm can handle it.

It’s one of the reasons this lens gets used so much for me. It’s not just a great 35mm lens; it gives me another way to photograph an event.

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 stole the show again. 📸

I normally start an event with this lens because it’s great for photographing details, decorations, and tables.

But what happens a lot is… I never take it off. 😂

Once the guests arrive, the 35mm is also great for portraits. It gives me enough room to work while still giving me that beautiful perspective I love.

So for this event, the RF 35mm f/1.8 ended up staying on my camera for the entire event.

Sometimes the lens you planned to use for one part of the event ends up being the lens you use for everything.

Why do I shoot RAW? Camera Matching Profiles. 📸

Camera Matching Profiles are color profiles designed to match the look of your specific camera, and they’re only available when you shoot RAW.

I remember when I first got my Canon R5, these profiles weren’t available yet. Getting the white balance and colors where I wanted them could be frustrating.

Once the profiles were released, editing became so much easier.

A good color profile gives you a great starting point for your edit, and that’s a major reason why I continue to shoot RAW.

RAW gives me more flexibility—and having the right profile gets me much closer to the look I want from the start.

Want to get better at editing your photos? Start mastering the Tint slider. 📸

The Tint slider controls the balance between green and magenta. I personally tend to lean a little toward magenta because I find it more pleasing for skin tones, while too much green can make skin look less natural.

But the bigger lesson is learning to actually SEE what your colors are doing.

So, one thing I’m focusing on to improve my editing is paying closer attention to my colors and using the Tint slider intentionally—not just moving it until the photo “looks right.”

Small adjustments can make a big difference.
