Recently, Kevin was asked to photograph a newly renovated warehouse after its remodel was complete. During the shoot, one of the workers asked, “How do you photograph an empty warehouse and make it look good?”

The answer sounds simple—but putting it into practice takes years of experience. Strong composition, the right perspective, and knowing how to showcase a space to emphasize its best features are where it all begins.

But there’s one more key ingredient that transforms an empty warehouse into a true glamour shot…

Here’s a look at the Beauty of Stockton feature from the July issue of Brookside Neighbors Magazine, showcasing Kevin’s photograph of the peaceful pond, graceful bridge, and stunning fountain along the University Park Discovery Trail. It’s a quiet reminder that some of Stockton’s most beautiful places are often the ones waiting to be discovered.

One of the most interesting changes I’ve noticed over my 35+ years as a professional photographer is how often clients now ask, “Are you going to pose me?” For most of my career, that question never came up, but now it's common.

I think there’s a misconception that natural, candid-looking portraits just happen. In reality, “candid” images are the result of thoughtful posing, subtle direction, and helping people feel comfortable to be themselves.

I’m so grateful that I learned during the film era from experienced professionals like Caroline Beebe and the outstanding instructors at Brooks Institute of Photography. Their guidance—and yes, plenty of criticism—taught me how to craft an image, not simply point a camera and hope for the best.

Helping people look and feel their best in front of the camera is an art, and it’s still one of my favorite parts of being a photographer!

A Grand Arrival

This week’s Beauty of Stockton highlights the beautifully restored waiting room of the Robert J. Cabral Station, originally built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1930. Designed in an elegant Italian Renaissance and Spanish Revival style, the depot welcomed generations of travelers arriving in one of California’s most important railroad cities.

Today, sunlight pours through the towering windows, illuminating the soaring ceilings, stately columns, and timeless architectural details that have been carefully preserved. Once the gateway to Stockton by rail, this remarkable space continues to welcome visitors, serving as both a working transportation hub for ACE train commuters and a lasting reminder of the city’s rich railroad heritage.

This portrait of my great-grandmother, Hazel Salmi, may be the ultimate photo!

My “Gigi” Hazel was a well-known Bay Area artist during the early to mid-1900s and played an instrumental role in the founding of the Richmond Art Center, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary later this summer.

When the Richmond Art Center asked if I had a childhood portrait they could include in the celebration, I was fortunate to have this remarkable image. It was photographed in San Francisco around the late 1890s by the Bushnell Photography Studio.

Curious about the studio, I did some research and discovered that its founder, Frederick Bushnell, was far ahead of his time. He built one of the West Coast’s first chains of photography studios, training photographers and establishing branch galleries throughout the region—an innovative business model decades before franchising became commonplace. A Palette of History
This week’s Beauty of Stockton image celebrates the 175th anniversary of the University of the Pacific, California’s oldest chartered university.
Founded on July 10, 1851, Pacific became the first coeducational university west of the Mississippi and has proudly called Stockton home since 1924. Its beautiful campus and iconic Burns Tower have become enduring symbols of education, innovation, and community.
From jazz legend Dave Brubeck and Hollywood icon Janet Leigh to Super Bowl-winning head coaches, influential business leaders, and astronaut José Hernández, Pacific alumni have made an extraordinary impact around the world.
Happy 175th Anniversary, University of the Pacific!
