Sometimes the Quietest Moments Speak the Loudest. 🤎💚

This beautiful Least Bittern stood perfectly still, looking to its right with one sharp eye locked on the wetlands around it. Its warm chestnut and golden colors blended beautifully with the lush green vegetation, while the soft bokeh mud bank created the perfect backdrop.

Least Bitterns are masters of patience and camouflage. They don't waste energy chasing every opportunity—they wait, watch, and strike when the moment is right.

There's a lesson in that for us, too.

Not every season of life requires constant movement. Sometimes the greatest progress comes from being patient, staying focused, and trusting that the right opportunity will come. When it does, be ready.

Stay patient. Stay prepared. Your moment is coming.

Curiosity is the First Step to Growth. 🦅🌲

This young red-shouldered hawk had recently started branching, venturing not far from the nest while still learning about the world around it.

Perched on a pine branch, it leaned to its left with one eye locked on me, as if trying to figure out who this guy with the camera was. Moments like these remind me that curiosity is one of nature's greatest teachers.

The brown pine branches and scattered needles framed the scene perfectly, making this one of my favorite captures from the season.

There's a lesson here for all of us. Growth begins when we're willing to step outside what's familiar. Every new branch we climb, every challenge we face, and every question we ask helps shape who we become.

Stay curious. Keep learning. Keep growing.

A swallow‑tailed kite slicing through the sky with an unlucky fella locked in its talons — pure precision in motion. The blue sky and rolling white clouds behind it made the moment even wilder. These birds are built for aerial hunting, and when they commit, it’s already too late for whatever they’ve targeted.

Thirty‑three years married today — and these two adult red‑shouldered hawks posted up on the purple martin house felt a little too accurate. One looking proud, the other looking like, “Yep… this is my life now.”

She calls it marriage… I call it a kidnapping.
Nobody told me the ransom would be bills, yard work, raising kids, and pretending I know where everything in the house is.

Some of y’all know the kidnapped‑guy skit… some don’t. But just know after 33 years, I’ve stopped trying to escape. At this point, I’m basically a well‑fed hawk in captivity — I get my meals, I get my sunlight, and I get told what to do.

But like these hawks, we built a nest, raised a whole flock of 2, and somehow made it look graceful from a distance. Here’s to 33 years of soaring, surviving, and occasionally getting side‑eyed on the perch.

Not My Usual Subject... But Sometimes You Make an Exception 🐿️😄

I spend most of my time chasing birds, but every now and then a squirrel insists on getting a turn in front of the camera.

This one was perched on the old wooden boardwalk railing at Phinizy Nature Park, happily enjoying a meal of vegetation while completely ignoring the photographer nearby. With the weathered wood, soft greenery, and beautiful bokeh filling the background, it was one of those moments that was simply too good to pass up.

What I liked most was how content it seemed. No rush. No worries. Just focused on the task at hand.

There's a lesson in that.

We spend so much time looking ahead to the next goal, the next project, or the next challenge that we sometimes forget to appreciate where we are right now. Every once in a while, it's okay to slow down, enjoy the moment, and be present.

Even if you're a squirrel having lunch on a boardwalk. 😂

– We've All Got That One Photo 😂🦅

This juvenile red-shouldered hawk was perched on my backyard fence back in 2018, and at the time I thought I had captured something pretty special.

As I started learning more about bird photography, I kept wondering why my images didn't have that sharp, eye-catching look I was seeing from more experienced photographers.

Looking back now, I can see all the things I could have done differently... and yet, I still posted it. 😂

The funny thing is, if I hadn't taken photos like this, I never would have learned how to take the photos I capture today.

That's the lesson. Don't be afraid to be a beginner. Don't let imperfect stop you from starting. Growth comes from taking the shot, learning from it, and showing up again tomorrow.

This hawk may not be my sharpest image, but it represents something even more important—a reminder of how far the journey has taken me.

📖 **Story Time...**
I spent two years switching my Nikon D850 into video mode, thinking I was ready for the perfect wildlife moment. Then this osprey gave me my chance.
**Wait for it...** 👀
I didn't capture the dive. It didn't even catch a fish. But I *did* capture the shakeoff! It became my **best worst shot.** 😅 The lighting was rough, the sun was against me, and the video was far from perfect—but every mistake became a lesson that made me a better wildlife photographer.
Was it worth the wait? I think so. Let me know what you think!

The Look 🔴🐦

This male northern cardinal was perched on a metal fence, body turned one way and eyes locked directly on me.

With the feathers on top of his head standing tall and the soft green background melted into beautiful bokeh, he seemed to be conducting his own inspection.

I could almost hear him thinking:

"You've been following hawks, herons, and kingfishers... now what exactly are you doing in my neighborhood?" 😂

One thing I love about cardinals is how much personality they can pack into a single glance. Sometimes the smallest birds make the biggest impressions.

There's a lesson in that. You don't have to be the biggest, loudest, or most powerful person in the room to make an impact. Be confident in who you are, stand tall, and let your presence speak for itself.

This cardinal certainly did.

🦉 Ever seen a baby barred owl climb a tree?
I haven't been out birding lately—I've been busy Mom sitting—so I've been digging through some favorite footage. This young barred owl had just left the nest box and was already showing off its climbing skills. Nature never stops amazing me.
