Nathan Hyde Photography

Nathan Hyde Photography Nature photography based in WI, focused on quiet moments, wild places & the stories nature tells us. As an adult, I found my way back to that childhood dream.

Born and raised in Northeast Wisconsin, I grew up dreaming of being a National Geographic wildlife photographer. The idea of capturing wild moments and sharing them with the world pulled me in early. It felt like a way to hold onto the experience and show others what I saw. I’m still a hobbyist at heart, sharing the photographs I collect along the way with anyone who wants to see the moments that stopped me and reminded me why I chased this passion in the first place.

Not often I capture the human side when I am out with my camera, but today, in the fog, I saw this fisherman on the ice of Lake Michigan, hoping for a catch before it completely melts away...

I stumbled upon this lovely eagle perched nicely and in the sun, as it was peaking through the trees, enabling some incredible shots. A nest is near by (probably 75 yards) and I see them here often but they rarely provide close-up shots.

Very cold mornings like this test your patience and your fingers.

I spent some time out at the open fields today, watching a few different owls working the landscape. Quiet passes, low light and that steady focused stare cutting through the cold. Moments like this make the discomfort fade fast.

Is anyone home? Captured this hawk hoping for an easy snack, perhaps he doesn't know that all the Purple Martins went south quite awhile ago.

I finally crossed paths with one of the birds I’ve been hoping to photograph for weeks. Short eared owls aren’t the easiest to find, and most evenings I come home with nothing but cold hands and a quiet drive back.

Tonight was different. Four of them moved through the fields, one settling long enough for me to catch this moment.

These little fellas are worth every mile and every empty search. Nights like this remind me why I keep heading back out there.

Wishing for spring on this snowy day. This pied billed grebe was one of those calm morning surprises that stick with you. Soft light, open water and a moment that felt warmer than it was.

As I prepare for a snowstorm overnight, I’m reminded of summer days when scenes like this were right at my feet. A quick pause in the yard, a quiet visitor in the grass, and a reminder that warmer days always come back around.

On cold winter days like this I find myself thinking back to warm summer fields. This monarch landed for just a moment and the whole scene felt calm and alive. Hard not to miss days like that.

I went out hoping to find short eared owls working the fields, but the owls never showed. Instead this harrier came gliding through the dusk and stole the whole evening. I didn’t plan on this shot but that’s the part I love the most. You never know what the prairie will hand you on a quiet night.

Dawn has a way of revealing the wild moments most people never see. I came across this eagle just after it finished feasting on a duck, the quiet stillness of the morning wrapped around the scene. If you look close, you can spot a second eagle perched on the island, eating his share.

Mornings like this remind me why I keep heading out with my camera. You never know what the day will offer.

There’s something about a fresh snowfall here in the Midwest. The air gets still, the woods get bright, and the wildlife shows up like they own the place. Found these doves perched in the cold and it felt like the kind of winter morning I grew up with. Simple, quiet, and worth sharing.

I spotted this Great Horned on my drive, rushed home for my camera, then made it back just in time. Early evening light, cold air, and a rare chance to sit with a beautiful bird.
