Tori was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2021. In September 2022, after chemo, surgery, radiation, and continued treatments, she found out that the cancer had spread to her lungs and spine. The next week, she came back to Virginia to visit and I asked if I could take a few photos of her. This one is my favorite.

Looking at this picture, you’d never know she was on oxygen almost around the clock. You’d never guess that she would lose her battle with cancer less than a month later. Even at her worst, she was so beautiful. I will forever be grateful that she let me take these pictures. I knew that she didn’t really want to, but she did it for me and she did it for those who love her. And really, that’s why she did a lot of things - for other people.

Later that night, I hugged her neck for the last time. Our family will never be the same. But I’m so grateful to have known her, loved her, and called her my family. She will be dearly missed.

This photo is from May 2020. It was Mother’s Day and for whatever reason I brought my camera over to the Hamiltons’ for a few photos. I’m not always very good about doing that, but I’m glad I decided to this day. Tori was living in northern Virginia but came into town for the weekend.

This is completely unrelated but one thing about Tori I always got a kick out of was how jumpy she was. If she was in the pool and the pool cleaner brushed up against her leg, she would GASP and jump in the air. If you walked around the corner and she wasn’t expecting it, BIG GASP! It always made me giggle.

Nick’s youngest sister Rachel was married in September 2020. While this wasn’t a portrait session, Tori was the maid of honor and there are numerous photos of her from that weekend that I feel are worth sharing today. That was a special weekend for our family, as Rachel and Cole were married in the Hamilton’s backyard. I had the honor of photographing the wedding. It was a busy day, but I remember Tori being on the dance floor most of the evening!

I never had the opportunity to do portraits of Tori and Stephen, who would become her husband in June 2022. The second picture that I took of them at the rehearsal dinner has always been a favorite of mine.

I also adore the picture Tori dancing with our oldest son, Theo. She loved being Aunt TT!

And of course, a silly sibling picture!

Today I’m sharing more from my session with Tori in 2015. I remember during this session I had to keep reminding her to relax her eyebrows because for whatever reason she would naturally raise her eyebrows when she was posing. Maybe it’s a ballet thing or maybe it was just a Tori thing. We would laugh about it and it would take a minute to shake off the giggles since we weren’t doing many smiling shots. But you can see those raised eyebrows just a little bit some of the pictures from that day and that makes me smile.

In June 2015, when she as 21 and visiting home during her time at Longwood University, I asked Tori if she would go out and take pictures with me just for fun. Sometimes as a photographer it’s refreshing and inspiring to take photos just for you rather than for a client. I borrowed a black tulle skirt from a friend (thanks, Sarah!) and we went to a nearby field. Tori wore some of her old pointe shoes and we had a blast. She was so beautiful and taking photos of her was always easy. There are so many that I love that I’ve decided to share a few today and a few tomorrow.

As I’ve mentioned, Tori was a talented dancer. That girl could light up a stage and looked like she was born to be there. While it was clear she loved being on stage, she also loved being at home in comfortable clothes with her loved ones.

In the 2008-2009 school year the Hamiltons hosted a foreign exchange student from Russia, Valeriya (“Lera”). She quickly became one of the family. In 2014, she came back to the states for a visit. I went out with the three girls and took a few pictures of Tori and Rachel with their “Russian sister.” I also did individuals of each of them (although I’m only sharing individuals of Tori today).

One thing I can’t help but remember when I think of Tori is how much she liked my cooking. That may seem like a selfish thing to remember, but I love to cook and bake, especially when it’s for other people and especially when they really enjoy it. I’m sure she didn’t know how much it meant to me, but she made numerous comments to me about it over the last 5 years or so, when cooking really became a hobby for me. One weekend when she came into town and stayed at our house, I planned to make banana chocolate chip scones. When I told her about it, I remember her saying “I was hoping you were going to bake while I was here!” That made my heart so happy and I loved that time spent with her in the kitchen.
