Memorable opportunity for Aerial Wildlife Solutions.

The morning started with some drone work, but with the sun warming up the area, the thermal drone wasn't giving us the results we needed. After a quick chat with the hunter, I realized he had very little tracking experience but was very confident in his shot. Normally, I’d recommend coming back that evening once everything cooled off but I just had a feeling. So l decided to put my boots to the ground.

We picked up the track where blood was last found. I was able to pick up a few more drops which significantly helped us with direction. Few moments later we had our hands on him.

It's always a great feeling to help hunters not only recover a deer but also teach something new along the way.

Here's to many more successful hunts and a big congratulations for his first buck!

We had a busy night but boy was it exciting. Big boys are on their feet and now is the time to get after it!

Our first stop was a quick 10 minute search recovering a nice 10-pt.

Unfortunately, the remaining searches did not have the same results. We were able to find each buck in short order but all with non-lethal shot placement.

Instead of pushing these deer, the hunters called us in to search. After locating these bucks and seeing the shot placement, we feel confident the hunters are going to have other opportunities at these giants.

We love what we do, but your success is what matters most.

Whether you're out for your first hunt or you’ve been at it for years, one of the most important skills you can have is a thorough understanding of deer anatomy. Knowing where to place your shot can mean the difference between a quick, ethical harvest and a long, challenging recovery.

🔬 Why Does Deer Anatomy Matter?
🦌 - Accurate shot placement ensures a humane kill.
🦌 - Helps avoid unnecessary tracking and suffering.
🦌 - Leads to a quicker and more efficient recovery—exactly what we specialize in!

When you're practicing, you're often on flat ground, but in the field, you might be faced with angled shots. These angles can throw off your shot placement, especially when you don’t account for the deer’s anatomy from different perspectives. That's why it’s so important to visualize and understand the body structure from all angles before the moment of truth.

Check out this awesome guide on shot placement from Ryan Kirby Art, a great resource for understanding where to aim for the best results.

An Illustrated Guide to Shot Placement on White-tailed Deer As an artist, I’ve spent my entire career studying the external anatomy of the deer I paint. As a bowhunter, I’ve spent those same years studying the internal anatomy of the deer I hunt. It’s crucial to understand the anatomy of a whi...

LOOKING FOR HELP!! What do the bear experts say? Is a hurt bear going for water, thick brush, food, the next county?!

Bear was hit last evening. We were able to find him bedded down about 330 yards from where he was hit. After watching him for a few minutes, he got up and walked about 30 more yards and bedded back down. We decided to leave him for the night and try again the next day. Flew this morning and searched the surrounding ~250 acres and no luck.

Most of our calls are for deer recovery. Over my years of hunting and now with a drone, I’ve been able to get a good understanding on the deers condition based on how they are moving, holding their ears, how they are breathing, ability to get up and walk, etc…. I don’t have all of that experience with a bear, but I’m trying to learn.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First bear of the year was a good one. Not only was it a decent size bear, but the hunter was 9 years old!

We were able to find him about 30 minutes of searching. Another great example of how we are able to find the animal without pushing them a mile off your property.

We will be back out in the morning in hopes he expires through the night

Good news! Oaks are booming! 🌰

Surveys show acorn production has bounced back across Virginia and this fall’s mast crop is sweet music to wildlife. According to the annual hard mast survey, white oak index climbed to 22, well above the 2023 all-time low and significantly higher than 2024, a bumper year on many routes.

What does this mean for hunters and wildlife viewers for fall 2025? Many wildlife species will likely be less mobile throughout the fall as they target these high-calorie food sources. This can make them less visible to both hunters and other outdoor recreationists as they may not use open fields, food plots, and other early successional habitats as readily.

Wait for it...

This is a textbook example on how thermal drones are changing the game in tracking/recovery!!

We got a call around noon on Saturday for a buck that had been shot that morning at 7:18 am. Great blood trail for ~150 yards then he bedded down. After the bed, there was absolutely nothing.

Due to the beautiful sunny day (terrible conditions for thermal), we waited for late that evening to go search.

After searching for about 2 hrs, we had covered approximately 250 acres before finally finding him bedded up yet again (11:30pm; more that 16 hours!!!), this time ~690 yards away from the shot. We quickly marked the location and got out of there.

After a short discussion we made the game plan to come back the next morning at first light, hoping he would pass through the night.

6am came quick and we were back in the air searching
With the hopes of flying right to our gps-saved location and finding him. As we arrived to that location, hearts began to sink. He was gone.

Back to the search. After working outward from his last bedded position, I focused on searching along the creek/ditch that ran through the property. After not having any immediate luck and needing to swap batteries, I regrouped and focused on ruling out as much are as possible, knowing that the sun would soon hinder our ability to search.

After getting a fresh set of batteries, we were back in the air. This time with a change of luck. This buck had gotten up, walked about 200 yards, uphill (28ft elevation change) to the edge of the field and finally expired.

24hrs later, 850 yards away from the shot, Brian had his hands on his first archery buck.
