Willie Reigstad Park in Sunburg was the 64th stop on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur baseball fields.

I visited a week ago Sunday when the Norway Lake-Sunburg Lakers played host to the Atwater Chuckers, a team whose home field I photographed earlier in the season.

Sunburg's park is named after a longtime local resident who was dedicated to amateur baseball. And the field is classic "town ball," with rustic structures and a grain facility in right field that provides a constant reminder of what keeps the local economy moving.

The game itself was a thriller -- a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th to tie the score, and a top-of-the-10th home run that almost hit me as I was repositioning in the outfield.

It was a sunny and pretty warm day, but I got some good photos to tell a story of the place. Here are some. More fields and photos to come!

Clearwater River Cats and Sauk Rapids Cyclones, here are some photos from Sunday's game in Clearwater. Thanks for an entertaining game -- close until the last pitch and walk-off grand slam.

Clearwater's field was no. 65 on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur baseball fields. A separate post featuring the field is coming. Till then, enjoy the photos from a sunny Sunday. The comments have a link to the entire album. Thanks to both teams for your hospitality, and good luck closing out the regular season!

I've posted game photos separately, and a post featuring Bonin Field is forthcoming. The field was no. 64 on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur baseball fields.

St. Patrick Irish and Metro Knights Baseball, here are some photos from Friday's game at St. Patrick. I took and edited A LOT of photos ... more than I usually do, because there was so much going on both on and off the field. That included the youth baseball activities. I'll do a separate post for that. Also look for a post featuring St. Patrick's lovely field -- no. 64 on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur baseball fields.

The comments have a link to all the photos. Feel free to share. Thanks to both teams for your hospitality and for being wonderful photo subjects on a sultry but fun night in southern Minnesota.

Wendelin Koep Sr. Stadium in Urbank was my 62nd stop on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur ball fields.

Home of the Urbank Bombers, the field is named after the Bombers' former manager who was instrumental in forming the Resorters' League, which, according to Koep's 2006 obituary, is the longest consecutively organized amateur baseball league in Minnesota. He also was the field's groundskeeper for many years, in addition to being "the Urbank town cop," as his obituary put it.

When I visited last weekend, I got to see and photograph a classic 1-0 pitchers' dual, with the Bombers defeating the Sauk Centre Titans. The field is classic too, with a wooden grandstand and press box and good vantage points along the foul lines. With the solid pitching, the game moved along, but I had time to get some nice shots as dusk was turning into nighttime,

Here are some photos that give a flavor of the place. More fields and photos to come!

Martin Schmitt Memorial Park at Pearl Lake was my 61st stop on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur ball fields.

Home of the Pearl Lake Lakers, "The Marty" is truly unique because it's the state's only amateur park that lacks an outfield fence. Center field is at the intersection of two Stearns County highways. Balls hit onto or across the road are home runs. Balls that bounce onto the road are ground-rule doubles.

If one or both of the roads were state highways, the ground rules might not work. But in baseball-rich Stearns County, the ground rules fly just fine it appears.

There's no other field in Minnesota like The Marty, and no better way to tell the story of it than with photos. Here are some favorites, from last Saturday's game between the Lakers and Cold Spring Rockies.

More fields (with outfield fences) and more photos to come.

Varsity Field in Upsala was my 60th stop on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur ball fields.

I visited last Friday night, when the Upsala Blue Jays played the Randall Cubs in a makeup game from earlier in the season. Because the canceled game was supposed to be in Randall, the home team was the visiting team and the visiting team was the home team ... but that didn't affect my enjoyment of photography at all.

I loved the contrast between the rustic grandstand and wooden outfield signs on the one hand, and a new press box, dugout, and spectator areas on the other hand. In many communities, the improvements need to be incremental as the funds become available, and Upsala and the Upsala Ballpark Association seemed to fit that mold.

Here are some photos from my visit to field no. 60. More fields and photos to come!

Solheim Field in Princeton was my 59th stop on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur ball fields.

I visited on Thursday last week during the community's "Baseball Day," which featured a Legion game before the amateur game at 7:30 between Princeton Panthers Baseball and the Albertville Anglers.

I arrived shortly after the first game ended, which provided a good chance to take some photos on the field. The wooden fence adds a lot of charm, and the water tower behind the place sure gives the field its sense of place in a vibrant community on the fringes of the St. Paul-Minneapolis metro.

The local team prevailed in seven innings, but I got plenty of chances to snag some decent photos, including during the beautiful twilight of a perfect early July evening.

Here are some photos that give a sense of the place. More fields and photos to come!

Norway Lake-Sunburg Lakers and Atwater Chuckers, here are photos from Sunday afternoon's sun-filled game in Sunburg.

What a fun experience all around. I came away with my favorite photo from my five-field tour Thursday though Sunday (the first photo posted here). I got to photograph a bottom-of-the-ninth grand slam to tie the game at 4. And then as I was repositioning myself in the outfield I almost got hit with an Atwater home run in the top of the 10th. 🙂 Good stuff.

Sunburg's field was no. 63 on my ongoing tour of Minnesota's amateur baseball fields. (Atwater's Kingery Field was no. 51, earlier in the season.) Other stops last long weekend were in Princeton, Upsala, Pearl Lake, and Urbank.

A separate post featuring the Sunburg field is forthcoming. Till then, here are some game photos. The comments have a link to the complete photo album. Thanks to both teams for your hospitality and a thoroughly entertaining game.
